Rescued the 639 from the bay a year ago. It was stored in original sheath and allowed to get wet. When I opened the original box the mold in the sheath and grip were overwhelming. Finally sent it in for a SPA treatment and it returned today.
They did a great job cleaning it and sharpening.
On my desk is a 119. Size wise they are almost identical. Purpose wise totally different or at least to me they have very different purposes.

The 119 while having a black handle does not to me have a dark purpose. Has the model been used for dark purposes? I am sure it has but to me that was and is not it's primary purpose. The 639 on the other has a dark purpose to me. In a bind it could process large game but the user would be frustrated when done. The saw back will cut 2x4's. When I look at the 639, I see a darker purpose. The blade is dull finish, the grip is green and dull and original sheath was dark.
Just my take on it.

My 119 came with a little fortune cookie like slip that said:
Welcome to The Dark Side (and then there was a little smiley face after that).:)
I think it's to be used for dark purposes or maybe just at night when it's dark out.
I made sure to keep it in its sheath in a dark drawer.

That knife was made for 1 purpose only. To get money from wannabe Rambos. Capitalizing on an 80’s frenzy for knives with saw backs.

In theory the saw on the back of a knife was meant to cut wood or to extricate ones self from an aircraft. Nothing dark there either.

It is a neat piece of Buck history. Were you able to save the sheath?

I love “Back from the spa” threads.

Glad you rescued it! I bought my 639 from the Base Exchange, back around 1987. My plan was to carry it in my survival vest, but I never did (long story). So it's never been used, and is stored away in a closet. I did sharpen it, as the edge never seemed all that great from the factory. Maybe one day I'll actually use it, or maybe it will just stay in storage. :)

I found one on the Bay about a year ago with a BIN well under $40.00 shipped with a shieth. I bought it on a whim JUST because of the teeth..After I posted a pic here I had a lot of offers to sell or trade but ended up sending to a friend with a nice block of Ironwood for his son to play with..

Dang. That was a steal or at least compared to prices I found.
Hope your friend's son enjoys it.

I do love finding a 'Bargain Buck' !! As far as I know the son never put on the Ironwood..
