Back Pack Suggestions

Howdy gear knuts! I shall be receiving my B.A. degree this May, and I thing I deserve a pack from myself for getting through University debt free! I was wondering what you folks could suggest. I prefer military style pacs, and I have been looking at the rather huge British PLCE Bergen. I have a small North Face pack and a little bit larger (maybe 35 litre) Canadian military pack, but I want something bigger/better. I'll be using it for the occasional trip to the boonies and also tabbing (fill it full and go a' running!) Any suggestions? Oh, I don't want to go into debt for a pack, but I don't want soemthign that will fall appart (i.e., I don't buy $30 folders, so i'm not looking for a $50 pack!)

Here are some of Blackhawk's popular bags that may suit your kit needs. I use the BHI Patrol Pack daily, it has plenty of room and is darn near indestructable. The boys at Blackhawk put a bunch of thought into designing this bag. Some more are:

The Sortie Patrol Pack

3 Day Assault Back Pack

BHI SOF Ruck

The BlackHawk R.A.P.T.O.R. (Ranger Assault Pack,Tactical Operations Ruck)

The Phoenix back pack

HydraStorm Force 5 - 2240
This is the newest addition to Blackhawk's line of packs.

All the bags are nearly indestructable, and are guaranteed for life. All the bags have compartments for a hydration system, the Hydrastorm force 5 comes with it's own hydration system. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions. All the bags and their prices can be found at This link
We offer 20% off to any military (active or prior) police, EMS and S&R.

Hope this helped.

I highly suggest the Arc'Teryx Arro 22. This pack is extremely well made and accepts hydration systems and holds around 1400 cubic inches of stuff. Here is a link

These run for about $140 and I think that they are worth it.

I suggest North Face packs as I have had mine now for fifteeen years, and it is great (Snow Lepoard) but it isn't millitary style.

The real reason I posted is to congratulate you on your BA, particularly debt free!

Well done!

Thanks to all.

Edge Dance, thansk for the congrats. By the way, a North Face carried all of my books for the duration of my time at the U!

P.S., I'm actually getting a second degree in October too! I figured 5 years is time well spent when I come out with a Philosophy degree and a Management degree!

Congrats, I'm going to finish my Masters this spring (english literature here), we'll have to congratulate ourselves, by buying gear and boasting (posting) about it

If you buy a new pack I promise to at least pick up a new sleeping bag.

I've heard that North Face has lost most of it's driving force, and is focusing more on clothes. It seems in the last couple of years their jackets became popular with urban youth, and the company followed the money, in protest most of the designers moved to Mountain Systems. North Face was always a well designed pack, with no frills, you had to use stuff sacks to secure your gear, there weren't a lot of pockets and pouches.

Best,

My vote goes for the Eagle Large Becker. It is one sweet pack. Indestructable. If SHTF and I have to bug out, I'm grabbing my Becker pack!

If you're looking for something a little more "sheeple friendly", you have a bevy of good choices. My faves are are Osprey, Mountainsmith, and Arc'Teryx. I've also had good luck with Lowe Alpine.

Edgedance is right about North Face. They have focused more on the big money-maker, which is clothing. I have a friend who works at The North Face, and being a long time backpacker, he'll be the first to tell you they've "sold out". Not to say they don't make great clothing. But the North Face packs made today are not the same quality of a few years ago.

I don't know how much you are willing to actually put into it, but before you buy anything, you should look at and try on a few Gregory packs.

They don't have the military look, but they work for going out in the woods, for certain.

I would go with something out of the Arc'Teryx Bora line. When my North Face Lookout wears out I'll probably replace it with a Bora 65. That said, the North Face Springbok seems pretty cool for a 50L pack.

No one has said it yet, but Dana Designs. I've had mine for 7 or so years now. Yes they are expensive, but they last, kind of like your B.A.'s!

I would agree with the recommendation of Dana Designs packs. They are usually kind of colorful, but the quality cannot be beaten. You can check out their sit at http://www.danadesign.com/. IMO they make the very best packs for carrying heavy loads.
If you don't mind having a non-OD drab pack, seriously consider Dana Design.

If you do not like the look of Dana Design packs or cannot find them, another good pack company as mentioned above is Osprey. Their site is http://www.ospreypacks.com/.

Hope this helps,

Bucky

I second the Becker patrol pack go to
www.lightfighter.com for an awsome
price on one. mine is a kick ass ruck
very tough.

I would not buy anything from Blackhawk I
have had a few problems and that is all I
am going to say about it.

Friends, your info has been extremely helpful!! I appreciate it immensely.

Shadow: Do you have the regular or large Becker? Can you give me more info on how much you can stuff inside it? I have been to www.lightfighter.com, and sent of a few e-mails to them. They define the word "service".

I've got to triple that for Lightfighter. That guy is great! Does he post on this board? I have seen him on a few others and I heard he has his own gear bord now, too. Does anyone know the address to it?
