Back Pocket carry for an XM?

Howdy folks,

I know this may be sort of a strange question, but do any of yall carry your Hinderer in your back pocket? And if so have you had any issues with it falling out or snagging? I've been debating selling a few things I neither want nor need to fund what I really want- my first Hinderer and I've been thinking about how I'd carry it. Oddly enough, in my small part of the world back pocket carry is far more common than front pocket carry and I've carried most of my knives in my back left pocket since I was a kid. It's actually rather useful since I'm left handed and right handed knives seem to carry better in the back left pocket than the front. I've been EDCing a 560cbcf and I've gone back and forth between tip up back with a lanyard and tip down front and I'm sort of in the middle on which is more convenient and comfortable. Hopefully before too long I'll have a chance to play around with an XM of my very own, but in the meantime I thought maybe someone could share some info or experiences. Thanks for the help and cheers!

I have a tendency to carry my XM 24 in my right front pocket and my XM 18 in my right rear pocket. No problems with it falling out/snagging etc. I tend to keep my pocket clips tensioned pretty tight, though.

Oh definitely. Pretty much every time I clean or sharpen my knife I adjust the clip tension. I've lost exactly one folder from my back pocket and it was very thick and had a miserable clip. Even one bad experience like that makes me paranoid though- especially with what will be my first XM.

That's how I carry. Ironically, tonight I bent the clip on my EDC pretty bad when I caught it on something. First time, too. :grumpy:

Ouch. I'm glad to see I'm not the only person around here who carries in their back pocket and I'm happier to hear that Hinderers hold up well back there. It's funny I suppose, before I joined blade forum I'm not sure I knew of anyone who carried I knife with a clip in their front pocket. I guess the back pocket is a western thing, but I rarely even thought about it till I lost a knife and joined here. Still I feel like my dominate side back pocket is where I always have easiest access.

I have been carrying strong side (Right for Me) tucked to the back of the front pocket since I can remember.
Now that I think about it - Nothing goes in my rear pockets, sort of a waste of two perfectly good pockets but..... old habits are just that - old habits.
I guess they do die hard.

It's probably for the best not to use rear pockets. I've heard for years that carrying a knife there and my wallet (I tend to carry larger wallets) will someday kill my back. Of course it's probably been 10 years since I've worn shoes with even vague amounts of cushioning so my back is probably already doomed.

Why don't your shoes have cushion? Go easy on your joints - you will miss them when they are gone (trust me on that score)

Good old fashioned leather sole cowboy boots. I probably wear mine 300+ days a year and the rest of the time classic sperrys which I suppose have a little support. I had a buddy in college who was a few years older who is now an orthopedic surgeon who always could identify me walking in pitch dark from my unusual gait from a life time (though it may have only been 17 years at the time) of knee abuse. Long story short- I need to buy better everyday boots.

Well, I wore my share of Frye and Tony Lamas - what they lack in "cushion" they make up for in form fitting comfort.

I have always been a dense person ( stop!) weighing more than I appear or my frame was possibly comfortable with. No doubt that and many years of abuse both Military and civilian has taken its toll - No complaints. Many have it far worse. I am considered these days a "Disabled Vet" because of injuries and the effects of Active Duty.
I am humbled by those with far far worse stories. Anywho....
Lost my train of thought.

Try switching up which back pocket you carry the wallet in. Favoring one side can irritate the sciatic nerve but it helps to switch it up. And the shoes without cushion aren't too bad if you aren't pounding the pavement (running) and if you have good biomechanics.

Thanks

I used to carry a third knife in the left front pocket until I picked up a BM SS pen. Now that resides there. Thinking of picking up a SS Hinderer pen to switch it up a little. Now I just need a recommendation from the Hinderer folks on which pen is a similar style/size. You can never have too much RHK gear ;)

Though I'm sure you've heard it thousands of times, thank you for your service- it isn't something all of us do, but its something we should all appreciate. I've never had any serious enough issues with joints (though I'm still in my twenties- albeit later twenties), being cautious with joints is probably a smart future aiming decision. And though I may love the style of Tony Lamas and the song New Tony Lamas always provided entertainment for some of my friends who couldn't quite grasp where I was from, I'm personally a Justin fan. They fit me as well as any off the rack boots can and I suppose that counts for something.

I carried a Gen3 Spanto for over a year in the sandbox, then on medical leave. Then tonight, I'm moving around a hotel room, and tear up my clip. Guess I get a dumbass award. Either that, or I need to lay off the pain meds.

That's pretty much the best "it isn't going to fall out unless you're drunk" endorsement I could hope for. If it makes you feel better I carried a knife with what I know now to be a dismal clip every single day from the age of 11 till I was 22 through woods, fields, and normal life. I give that knife to a friend as a momento, buy a new one and lose it playing blackjack in a casino 2 weeks later. I'm sure I'll be paranoid about it for awhile, but I'm excited to play with one and I think this is all the endorsement I need to feel ok carrying how I like.

Hey, I'm not drunk! :D

But I do take heavy-duty pain meds 24/7, so my coordination isn't always there. :p

No drunkeness presupposed! I don't take any real pain meds, so I was just trying to equate as closely as I could ;)

No worries, I was just having a laugh. But I've been on these meds for almost 5 years now, I'm pretty used to them. But a drink or 2 can sure help them do their job. :p :D

It's hard to go wrong with good bourbon. I've been putting folks under the table with it for a very long time. I thought I could handle most any meds or anything of the sort till I was prescribed low dose vicadin a few years ago for some pain and became totally worthless. A 4'11 95lb girl I know with chronic pain was taking 5x much as me and it didn't even noticeably affect her. Close to a foot and a half and 100lb difference and I was passing out on my couch. Some of that stuff is intense to say the least.
