Being from NE central PA, I see that southerners, & some westerners carry their jackknives in their backpockets. We were curiopus as to how you keep it from a. falling downward (&out), & b. breaking the scales when you sit.?

In the past I have carried various SAKs in my back pocket next to my wallet.
They always seemed to stay put.
I like carrying my slippies in my fron pocket but I mostly carry medium or small ones most of the time.

I carry the big one shown here in my backpocket with my wallet. Wallet keeps it upright till I pull my wallet out. Gotta be careful when I do that or I sometimes fling out my dang knife ninja style :) but most of the time the knife will just lay down horizontal in my pocket till I put my wallet back in and rearrange.

Most of the time, I don't even know the knife is there and I have been carrying it for over a year. It is 4.5" long

I carry my Case Sodbuster Jr in my backpocket all the time. Its the one without my wallet. It seems to always be out of the way. Never even know its there.

My trapper is currently in my back pocket, lying down horizontally, as it has been for years (some of my jeans have the outline of that knife worn into the denim). Never had any of the problems you mentioned.

Carry either my Vic Farmer or my Queen #70 in my back pocket sitting vertically next to my wallet. For me it's more comfortable than in my front pocket.

Yeah that IS a nice one there! I can't stand anything in my backpockets at all, not even a wallet. I carry my wallet in the right front pocket, over my change. Pocketknives go into the left front pocket. Unless it's wintertime, in which case I'll often drop them into any conveniently reached jacket or coat pocket. No backpockets for me, can't sit on a lump, hurts my butt too bad! :p

Lately I've been putting my buck 110 or 112 (depending on the day) in my right back pocket along with my wallet. It sits there vertically until I pull my wallet out which isn't that big of deal. I use my knife more than my wallet .

Plus it takes away the bulk of the knife sheath.

My stockman rides in my right front and, when I have a day at work when I need it, my leatherman blast rides in its sheath on the left side.

First of all, I make sure its closed. Next, I carry one with micarta handles so I dont have to worry about breakage. To keep it from falling over, I carry a larger size, 4.5 inches closed (either by a Bose or Halfrich) and I put a short paracord lanyard on it with a couple Matthew Walker knots in it. Keep the knot hanging outside the pocket, and the knife doesnt move around much.

If it's not, that OUGHT to be some sort of ancient parable about thriftiness from a wise elder like Ben Franklin, Confusius or jackknife :) ........ You know, like: "It's a wise man who uses his knife more than his wallet."

Regarding backpocket carry, like puukkoman, there was a period of time as a kid when all my jeans had worn outlines of my Schrade LB7. I still carry a big knife back there from time to time, a trapper mainly or my SAK Adventurer.

Still find it uncomfortable to sit down when you've a knife in your backpocket...also more fiddly to extract.

Hey Kerry,

I'm just having a hard time believing you with the backpocket carry..!! I think the only way for me to really understand is for you to send me those knives to carry around for a year or two...

Sorry for your troubles but I'll be mailing you my address so you can mail them my way...:D

For many years I have been carrying my Vic Soldier in my back pocket horizontally below my wallet.

It stays put and is easy to retrieve. I don't notice any additional bulk because the wallet is already there.

Same here :p
I carry my schrade 125 in my back pocket and my camillus stockman in my right front pocket (with my zippo), and some change in my left pocket.

Dont really know why I carry it it in my back pocket, just always did it that way.

I like carrying slippies of 3.75" or greater length in my back pocket. I find it more comfortable to carry that way and also easier to retrieve and put into use. I hate stuff banging around loose in my front pockets.

Smaller slippies carry well in the watch pocket of my jeans.

I only carry folders with clips in the back pocket. Small slipjoints go in the front pocket.
