From time to time I have seen certain folders revered to as a 'back pocked knives'. Now I am very curious to know, what is a back pocked knife? What sets it apart from other knives?

What do you think?

Pictures are of course more than welcome

Thanks!

I may be wrong here, but I am pretty sure Tony Bose started this term (or at least made it the vernacular around the knife world). That's my story and I am sticking with it until Tony sets me straight. Tony might just say it is a knife ya put in your back pocket. :)

The pattern is much like this one shown and the size can vary.
The pic is a knife from Mike Zscherny who got the pattern from Tony. I am carrying this one today.

A Backpocket is a Bose original term to describe a 4" (mostly) single blade knife to be carried on the back pocket of your jeans. Like the man said, that's my story I'm sticking to it. In any case, if you have a Bose Backpocket, well, you're one very lucky dude.

I am one of those lucky dudes :

I wouldn't be sitting on that stag, it would never leave my hand:D

I think the term might also apply to any hefty 4"/ 10cm + knife that's a bit too bulky for front carry.

Slide it down alongside a wallet and it's perfectly safe, waiting to come out to be admired. :)

The pictures here seem to be single blade trapper style. Would some other pattern like a Barlow or swell-end jack qualify also?

Tony refers to this single blade trapper style as his "back pocket" pattern. This one fits in the front jeans pocket as well. (Where it is happily ensconced as we speak.)

I could never get used to carrying alongside the wallet. Mine rides solo in its own pocket.

Elliott, your Bose back pocket is stunning! Bastid's is beautiful, but Tony's knives seem to have a perfect symmetry that the others lack.

While Mr. Bose obviously makes a "back pocket" pattern, I found that 4" or longer slim slippies make for a decent back pocket knife. I recall using a Case Seahorse Whittler for a while (In orange G-10). Fit well right next to my wallet in my back pocket & was easy to get out.

Here's the rig some over on the Buck forum are using for backpocketing 110/112 or others. Medium sized wallet can slip right down beside it. Sized for jeans pocket and you chose which side you want to carry knife in pocket......

Thanks for the information and the nice pictures. Good to learn some more knife lore! They look like very useful knives.

Thanks for showing us that 300Bucks. That is nice. I just got a Seahorse Whittler, I may try to make one!
