Hey guys,
Made my first pack-pocket sheath, for a knife I posted pictures of a little while back.

It came out pretty well, all things considered- well enough, that is, for me to carry it around town without worrying about the knife falling out, stabbing me in the rear, etc.

So here's the questions, I'm pretty sure I'm not dipping these right. I've got a quart jar part full of beeswax, which I heat up in a pot of water on the stove. Then I kida dip the sheath in and swirl it around.
Seems like I'm ending up with WAY too much wax on the leather.
On the sheath pictured above, I even blotted it off with a paper towel while still hot, and it STILL feels waxy (and smells like honey).

What's the right way to do a wax dip?

Thanks!
Mike

Mike,
Looks pretty usable for a first sheath bro...After I dip mine I rub any excess off with a papertowel or rag...After it dries I run a heat gun over it, in the places that seem like it has to much wax...Rewipe it and go and sin no more!! :)

If that doesnt work, you can heat the sheath up in the oven on a very low temp for a few minutes and wipe off the excess then

Question...Where did ya get the pocket clip?? I need to get some of those! PM me if you dont mind!

First,I have to ask because it looks like you have the flesh side out.If so why? Also why are you using a wax dip on a pocket sheath?I would have used Tan Kote, or Leather Sheen, much less trouble and mess.Dave:confused:

Dave,
You're right, it is flesh side out, but that's because both sides are like that. There's no smooth side, the inside is the same rough texture. This was the first side of leather I ever ordered, and I didn't know quite what I was looking for. Oops :)

As far as wax dipping, I just happened to have some beeswax on hand. I'd read about how great it was, so I thought I'd give it a shot. Can't hurt to have a waterproof pocket sheath, right?

Big oops. Ok for future info ,order veg-tanned leather, shoulder is best side will work also, no bellies. For that size sheath 4-5 oz will work.Anything bigger , go to 7-8 oz.Grain side out. There's no such thing as waterproof for sheaths, just water resistant and too much wax not only gets all over your clothes and knives, it is an abrasive magnet. And if wax dipped sheaths are so good ,why is it very few pro sheathmakers do it.I am sure some here will obviously disagree with me, but that is my opinion.Keep trying and lets see some more.Dave:)

Bee's wax is fine for lubing your thread and the blade of your awl. Sometimes I even chew a little---rather tasty! ---Sandy
