Back to Bearsics

You All leave those Black Bears alone! They're just a little hungary, just step back a few paces. When they get filled up they'll leave. The Black Bear is my totum animal. In the late '70s my wife and I lived in a tipi up in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. After spending all day setting things up my wife, daughter, dog and myself crashed for the night. I woke up at daybreak and went out to relieve myself and was walking back towards the tipi and noticed these big dirt smears on the new white canvas. Walking up a little closer I realized that it was a bear foot print, he had walked around the tipi and put four paw prints on the sides just barely poking his claws into the canvas. We had food inside too. The week before a bear had destroyed another Tipi over on the other side of the mountain from where we were. And not long before that a bear had grabed a young pig out of a friends pen behind his cabin in the middle of the night, he heard the commotion and ran out with a shotgun saw the bear with pig in mouth jumping over the fence and high tailin' it up the mountain side fired once but missed. Anyway after that I figured that the bear had given us permission to live there and they sort of looked out for us. We lived there for about 1 1/2 years never bothered by man nor beast after our visit. Gewi

And keep your favorite khukuri close by at all times.
We have music to make later on this year or whatever you want to call it.:D

Bro,

I hope you could call it music. Just got back in from the bush checking for sign and hunting up some desert tea and good didg material. Found some.

Black Bear,

Bears are pretty safe from me as long as they behave. I do strongly believe in rewarding bad manners appropriately though.
Bear is a powerful totem and you had a very special experience. That sounded like a good life too.

Hi all,

I watched the film footage of that bear chase. It was hilarious. The agile bear jumped over tall fences... climbed on rooftops, dodged LE and Game Officers for over five hours from what the TV station said (I get Denver stations on the satallite).

We don't have bears here in SD... just the evil Urban Deer and two Mountain Goats up the canyon a ways. I had one of them goats try and drop a few pounds of slate rock on my head while hiking back up a creek a couple of summers ago. Wasn't his fault really... I was throwing a stick into the creek for a friend's Lab to fetch. He just came down the rock wall (almost vertical) to see what was going on... What a sight!

Bro If you get to drive back to the Khonvention do you think you could haul a couple of pieces along with you?

And it would be Really Great if you found enough to share one or two with Rob. Rob says he's gonna be here, but he will have to send them to himself as I don't believe the airline would let him carry something like that on
board.
The airlines would probably think it was some kind of evil blowgun or something.:)

He can finish the Didj out himself.
I sure hope I kept that Website that 'splained how to make a Didj from the plant.
But I think it was pretty simple as it only needs split and cleaned and then sealed with some epoxy.

Do they have some pretty good bell shaped ends? I have been lead to believe those make a more resonant
Didj.
I still don't understand how a person can get any back pressure from a hollow tube that big, but Rob says it's so and I have to take his word since he actually plays the Didj success-
-fully.
Actually I think any resounding lasting note would be a success for me.:D

Maybe one of the smaller khukuris would do the job of cleaning out the inside.
And a karda for shaping the mouthpiece for the beeswax.:D

It's sure slow in here today. even for a Saturday for some reason.

And I'm also wondering how come the forums have been down for a period the last two days or am I the only one who noticed that?:)

Yvsa, this is the link your speaking of. Just choose 'Technical Corner' to get to the building section.
Black Bear, way cool experience sir :)

Bro,

If I can come, I certainly will bring them with me. I believe I can harvest some with a good bell end. It has been slow.

Bill,

Thanks for the link. I printed out the section on selecting a stalk and it will be very helpful.

I get a feeling that some of my fellow forumites think I try to run up and hug every bear I may run across, like those great outdoors people that visit the Smokey Mountains and happen upon a bear in the trash can, grab the kids and pose beside the bear, sometimes with cubs for a family photo. I'm surprised more folks don't loose a arm or head. I have a close kinship with the Black Bear on a spiritual level but I keep a healthy respect for there space and mine on this here physical plane. Gewi

Gewi,

I never thought so. I have the kinship you describe with Wolf. Never been much of a cat lover.

Black Bear, are you going to be able to make it to Catoosa? Finn, how about you? I've got to get my tickets firmed up but it looks like a go to me. I'll make the final "go to Catoosa" post tomorrow.

:
I made sure that I saved it this time, so even if I did so before at least now I know for sure where it's at.:)

And Gewi I never thought so either.
And there's something you may already know, but I'm gonna remind you
anyway.
And I believe it will be alright to say this here since it's not revealing anything Sacred to us
ndns.
When a person has a totem animal that animal should Never under any circumstances be eaten.
That would be the same as cannabilism
and bad ju ju would come down on that person for the rest of their
life.
And I think it's alright to mention this as well.
It was an old time trick among some Medicine People to bring bad ju ju to a person, by camoflauging the meat of that persons totem animal and feeding it too them under the guise of a ceremony, even a healing ceremony.
And if a Medicine Person was caught doing something like that their life would become forfiet and they were usually hunted down and killed unless they were very strong and had enough Medicine Power to get away.
But then that person had to live the rest of their life alone which for a Medicine Person is about the worse thing imaginable.
Those kinds of Medicine People needed others to keep their power strong as they were like vampires and became strong by weakening the people they preyed upon.

I have association with more than two animals and instead of making things easier it's more often the reverse.:)

And that's all I can/will say about the subject here.:)

Yvsa, I noticed on Saturday that for part of the day I could get on line but could not open any web site, I thought it was the WORM at his worst.
Finn, I did not think you doubted. I put that reply in sort of jokingly for Yvsa's comment on arming myself with a kuk. I tend to babble a little to much and people that don't know me sometimes miss understand some things I blurt out. But I think that s great that you have a relationship with the Wolf, good Totem.
Uncle, I'm sorry as badly as I want to make your B-Day Party I won't be able to make it. Money is pretty scarce right now. We've been trying to scrape enough together to see our daughter in CA. and thats not going to happen any time soon.
Finn & Yvsa, What is this Didj? It sounds similar to the Aboriginal Didgerido? Well I butchered the spelling on that. Hope you know what I mean.

OK. Maybe we'll have another convention in Reno early next year. I'm trying to get something together.

That would be super. I really would love to meet everyone I've been chewin' the fat with here on station WWHI. It would be a great pleasure.

The conventions are great fun and good times for everybody. What you see on this forum is what you get at the conventions in the flesh. Great guys make a great convention.
