I've been meaning to post of awhile, I moved, half the people I work with got fired, and everything in between. It set my knifemaking back back about a year, Haven't made anything since last December. Last year I went to Harvey Holbrooks shop and It really Helped me get started, what I needed, basics of Hollow grinding, Harvey showed me how varible speed grinders really help when grinding, Really couldn't have got started with out his help. So a bunch of stuff happened couldn't make knives for about a year. I kinda got frustrated. So in October I took a forged cutlery class taught by Herb Derr. (You should google his name his knives are beautiful.) This was the kick in the butt I needed to get going again. The class was very informative covering forging, some stock removal, demonstration of forging a hawk, Heat treating/ diffrenential tempering of Carbon steel, and handling knives. Anyone that is interested he teaches a cutlery class once a year and Damacasus class twice a year in Ripley, WV. The website is Cedarlakes.com . I'll be there in the spring for the Damacasus class. Herb is very Helpful, and a great teacher, I knew alot of the stuff from reading books and bladeforums.com, but seeing it in person and asking questions was great, A great class for the beginner knifemaker. The class rocked in IMHO. Also For the 3 day class with lodge, class and meals itwas right around $260.00, But if you live close enough I think the class was $110.00 alone. I just wanted to tell all the beginners out there I think when you go to a class, knifemakers shop it really cuts the learning curve. I'd recommend it to anyone that really wants to get a jump on making knives. So within a week of the class.
I got my new shop setup, and hard at it 10-12 hours a day on my days off. I'm going to post pics soon. Sorry if this was a rant, just wanted people to know I think it really teaches you alot visiting other makers shops and small weekend classes.
