I have been (very unsuccessfully) trying to design my very own holster for my own personal carry that matches some of my knife leather. I know it's hard to re-invent the wheel as most useful holster designs have already been created, and I'm pretty sure I can copy some of those but I just wanted to try something just a tad different. I made a kydex holster for my G43 (my absolute favorite carry gun) and have been using it for the last 6 months. It carries really nicely and its very practical but try as I may I just can't warm up to kydex.
I have made leather pancake holsters in the past that work great but I want something with a lot lower foot print that is a lot easier to put on and take off than a pancake. A single belt loop would be great but a clip would be the best.
I started off wrong when ordering a clip. I ordered the completely wrong type because the vision in my head thought it would be the best one at the time.
Anyhow, neither of my leather holsters are going to work. neither one packs very well. The first one I made, I used a kydex belt loop thinking it would hold up over time better than leather but it just doesn't look the best and I made the gun profile stitches around the trigger guard a little too tight so the gun doesn't sit in the holster quite as deep as it needs too making the rig a bit top heavy.
The 2nd holster I tried I used a leather tunnel type integrated into the stiffener. I made the loop large thinking it would suck in tight once my belt was tight but it is still too top heavy. So I got the wrong clip I ordered and tried saving a screw up but the clip is too far toward on the part of the holster that starts to round and makes the butt of the gun poke out a bit too far.
Anyway, I think I am going to order the correct clip, redesign the stiffener that I can put the clip on the stiffener and make sure it rides to where the gun will lay more flat while carrying it. Much like most good holster makers do!
The three holsters I have made for my G43. The kydex on bottom, the first attempt in the middle and the 2nd failure on top.
The first one. The gun doesn't sit down in the holster quite a much as it should. Just enough to annoy me.
And the kydex belt loop just doesn't go with it.
The 2nd attempt. The gun sits in the holster great but it just doesn't ride well because the leather belt loop was way to low and the metal clip rides too far forward.
I'm sure having fun learning though and it looks like I'm going to be copying some of the tried and true designs!
