Well, how did this happen?

I just ordered a 2012 124.

A bit of History,
I carried my Dad's Schrade-Walden Bearhead for a long time. In the early '80s I saw a Cocobolo Woodsman in a store while shopping with my wife. I mentioned to her it was the closest thing I had seen to my dad's knife. Only I thought it was even prettier. Never giving it another thought.

Having done a great job in marrying, it was under the tree that Christmas. Loved it. Retired my dad's knife to the place of respect it deserves. Then I used my 102 without thought or incident for many years. Field, camp, kitchen, it did it all. It was my knife, period.

Then somehow I found places like this, and other knives. Many other knives. Many, many other knives.
All had reason and explaination why they were better than my lowly Buck. I bit. I have draws full of knives. Many need routine maintenance to prevent rust. Many come without sheaths. Many are truly beautiful. Some are bigger, some are tougher, most are more expensive, but I am not sure any are truly better than my little Woodsman. That knife has cleaned more game than all the rest put together.

TAA's write up over on BCUSA, about always wanting a 124 brought back many of the same thoughts for me. I too had seen that Nacona poster. And always lusted after the 124.

So I wandered in here. Where the 124 has gained almost legendary status. What's a guy to do?
This morning, an order went out for a new 124 before they are gone again. I am excited! It is like coming home.

Lately and before my reacquired fondness for Buck. I have realized, I have way to many knives. I never wanted to be a collector. I just wanted a few users. But my search for the ultimate knife or knives managed to fill many draws, closets, and safes.

As I have been slowly reducing my collection to a more reasonable group of working knives. I realized early on,that the 102 was not going anywhere. Still sharp, still pretty, and packed full of memories that all the others don't have.

Today was sort of an eye opener for me. Crap man, Buck makes a really nice knife. If the 124 turns out to be anywhere near the companion the 102 has been. I should be a very Happy Camper. Already thinking of a baldric for it.

I realize I am preaching to choir. But sometimes you just have to say things out loud. Maybe if I had read a thread like this thirty years ago. My draws would be full of money instead of knives.

Thanks to Lawrence TAH, and all of you for your Buck enthusiasm.

Lost, welcome to the Buck forum. You'll find some good information here. Enjoy your visit. DM

LostViking,

Glad to hear I was a bad influence on someone. :D You're going to love your new 124 and it will be a great companion for your 102. I have to tell you how much I enjoyed and related to your post. My story is much the same, however my Buck fixed blade was a 105, which I still use today. I, too, could go on and on about all the knives I bought and sold over the years and how and why I came back to my old Bucks several years ago, but I won't, because you said it best in your quote below - just scratch out 102 and insert 105.

Please let us know your thoughts when your 124 arrives. Of course, pics are always welcomed. :)

ETA: Boy, does this sound familiar...:o

But my search for the ultimate knife or knives managed to fill many draws, closets, and safes.

One more thing, Lost. Unless you want more drawers filled with knives, stay away from this...:D

TAH, that is not an easy book to come by. I could not find one still wrapped in tight wrap, but could only find used and almost new at very high prices. I would love to have that book, both to use and to put a sealed copy away. If you, or Joe Hauser (lurking), knows of a reasonable source, I would appreciate hearing about it.

saw,

I "won" my book last week on a very popular internet auction site. The seller's opening bid was $25.00. A few hours before the auction closed, I placed a bid for $25.00 and won it. I was the only person to bid. Book arrived a few days later in "like new" condition. They're on that site quite frequently. I didn't care if it was shrink wrapped in mint condition, because I planned on reading and enjoying it.
