i got me a new EDC saturday. i found me a 885UH in a pawn shop. great knife!! but the thing is, i have alot of trouble sharpening a stainless blade!! i am so used to carbon, this stainless is like trying to sharpen a rubber ball!!! but it is a very nice knife, and yesterday when i pulled it out to open some balloons for my little girl, she had a fit when she seen the staglon handles. she reminded me of alot of ebay sellers, she swore it was deer antler!!:D i like the feel of it in my hand, and i hope i can sharpen it like a few of my other schrades!!

fireman, I used to have the same problem with the stainless blades, but not since I left the old fashioned stones in the drawer and started using a fine diamond hone. I had been using one made by Gerber that looks like an ink pen, but can't find them any more. I have a flat one now made by someone else. Schrade sold what they caled a "Jewel Stick", round like the Gerber, but I've not gotten one of those yet. I've EDC'd my 897UH for quite a few years, and I've found that a part of the secret to keeping it sharp is to not let it get overly dull in the first place. Don't wait until it won't cut before you touch it up.

The Baer brothers did find a winner with the Staglon stagged Delrin handles. It took some experimentation and plastics evolution to get there. And I agree, the specific mold texture and dying technique are what makes it work. Some attempts by other manufacturers patheticaly miss the mark. But the few who genuinely see the difference (and care) are now coming amazingly close.

Thankfully there is still no shortage of the original Schrades out there on the secondary market, and occasional small caches are still surfacing from primary dealers. I recently bought, with the help of members on opposite ends of the continent, a 36OT, a SK36 (Green Delrin and brass Skoal version) both new in the 90's box, and a pair of 897UH still in the pre-2003 clampacks, all substantially discounted.

I am reminded of a thread from late 2004 / early 2005 titled "When will the supply of Schrades dry up?". Not for a while yet I'm thinking.....hoping!

yea, the convential "wet rock" aint doing it. i tried it on the stone then some rods. guess i will go back in the shop here at work in a bit and see what i can do with it.

i seen some of the "fake" staglon handles, they were cheap looking, wasnt as creamy looking as schrades. alsom, i saw my first skoal knife this weekend. it is a nice knife, but i wonder about the shield in the handle. this guy at the flea market had 3 of them, $18 a pop, but i noticed that the shield didnt look as sturdy as the UH or OT shields. i also expected a skoal shield like the copenhagen shield. but overall, i liked the green handles, and the size of the ones he had.

i agree, i think there will be a bountiful supply of schrades for awhile. i notice one week i see none, then the next i see hundreds.

if u ever out this way, i cn show u a few places i know of that have lots of fixed blades codger. actually, the pawn shop where i got my UH had mucho fixed blade schrades.

alright codgr, i found me a diamond sharpner in the shop, worked like a rooster in a new hen house!!! thanks!! now, if i could just kill me a 30 point buck to try it out on.....
