Who carries a back up knife or cutting instrument should they lose or damage their primary when in the field? What is it?

My normal carry blades in the bush are a machete and a small sheath knife. I also have a SAK in a pouch in the pack. These all have their role to play and really have a hard time making up for each other. Yes you can baton with the small fixed blade but thats a poor sub for the machete.

The only knife that I could consider a back-up if all else is lost blade is my Becker BK-7. The one knife that sees little use if you have a large and small blade is the 7 inch sheath knife. My machete is strapped to my pack however. If the pack is lost I would want to have a capable large knife with me as a back-up. I don't like having a machete on my belt as it is too cumbersome for the majority of tasks that I have to do in camp.

When I carry the Becker on my belt I also have a Newt Livesay NRGS around my neck as my small blade. I feel pretty good with these two no matter where I am. Mac

Besides a 4" fixed blade as my primary fixed blade, I carry a SAK on my belt. If I have a pack with me, there's a fixed blade stashed there as well.

I've got a SAK and a Leatherman...

So far they've done most everything I ask... Icing on the cake would be a SAK with a blade. Mine is a Spartan. :D

I was told by a old freind that is also one of the old time woods types that a man that takes only one knive into the woods is a fool, but he depends on his axe much more than alot of people these days, I carry three knifes a cold steel srk, sog field pup and a ontario marine raider bowie( got the bowie for christmas and added to my bug out bag)also carry a ewing axe, the full size one really it depends on the person but a small one and a large one will about cover all a persons needs.

I never go into the wild without at least 2 blades... My main blade is a Swamp Rat Camp Tramp, and the primary backup is a fallkniven F1 (I'd like to get a Howling Rat some day, though :D).

Sometimes I choose a good ole red handled Mora though... ;)

Cheers,

David
