Is the cold steel frontiet hawk a good tomahawk for backpacking if not what would be a good sugguestion. Going on first big backpacking trip in four years in the weeks

Their Riflemans hawk or Pipe hawk are either one a better choice for your trip.

If you are going to go Cold Steel make absolutely sure to get the hawk enough in advance to allow time for reprofiling the edge and fine tuning the hawk. They DO NOT come ready to use.

If you have very the dough, you'd be better served with a wetterlings or Gransfors Bruks hatchet.

Thanks man and after looking at the two hawks I will go with rifle. Would go for the gransfor axe but just don't have the money to buy one yet. PS normaly I would take a big knife for this type of trip but its against the rules to bring one with the group I'm going with

 You can bring an axe or a hawk, but NOT a knife? What kind of group are you going with? Me, I'd skip it.

You can bring a knife it just has to be under four inches can't be tactical or Rambo style along with a few other things and its pretty hard to do chopping and spilting wood with a four in knife. The reason I need the axe is due to me not being able to bring my Bowie knife with me which h I normally use for everything from opening cans and package to battoning wood

I have a Riflemen's hawk and i like it, it's a little on the heavy side but is has been good to me for the past 4 years. you may want to order a spare handle with it, i cracked mine a few weeks after i got it and had to replace it but haven't had to replace it since.

Why not go with a lightweight Fiskars hatchet. It'll make a better chopper than a 'hawk and it will fit in your pack better, too. Also costs less.

Oh, and it they're freaked out about a 4-1/2" knife then how do you think they'll feel about a tomahawk?

Interesting. Do they have any requirements on size or shape of the axe?
I'm liking the Kentucky pattern myself lately. It goes back to the 18th century, so you can call it a tomahawk, and it has a long poll you can harden for pounding, but it doesn't have those sexy tomahawk curves that frighten the plastic scissors people.

If you are hiking, I would suggest the Pipe hawk. I have the rifleman, and it is a heavy sucker! I also have the norse and spike hawks (though those would be too scary).
