I'm looking for a good, thought backlock folder. Value for money, is the Manix the fist choice?
Thank you for your help.

The Manix is very nice, but you should also check out the Buck 110....especially Buck's Custom Shoppe 110's, and the Alaskan Guide 110 with S30V blade-steel (available from Cabela's), and the Bass ProShop 110 with 154CMP blade-steel.

Good luck,
Allen

For the money, Spyderco's Native is $40 and Byrd's Cara-Cara is less than $30. The Manix is one heck of a knife, though, and very heavy duty.

"Tough" isn't necessarily big, and the Manix / mini-Manix series are big, heavy-duty lockbacks. If you're looking for a big rugged knife, I don't think you can beat those two.

If you're looking for something that's pretty tough in a smaller size, the Caly 3 in G10 from Spyderco is similar to the mini-Manix but smaller. If you don't care about G10 scales, the Natives or the Delica 4 / Endura 4 series from Spyderco (again) are as tough as anything in their size range.

If you like a more traditional looking modern folder, Ka-Bar has some tough lockbacks. And then there's Buck as someone has already mentioned. They are classics, but they do tend to be somewhat heavy and brass takes a bit of care to keep it looking bright and shiny (if that matters to you).

All of these knives will have pretty good blade steel. The Spydercos will be at the top of the line for high-end blade steel, but Ka-Bar's AUS8 and Buck's 420HC have a lot of fans (and detractors).

I will recommend a Manix to people who need a stout lock back until the day I leave this world. For me, it is the ultimate affordable heavy duty folder.

Seems hard to believe, but the Manix series has been discontinued by Spyderco. If you want one, I wouldn't wait too long. There might be a successor coming, but no one seems to know yet.

There is a Manix 2 in the works. Don't know the release date but it should coincide with the discontinuation of the Manix.

Many kindly reply.
For the Cabela's 110 I have to say I don't like coated blades in folders:thumbdn:
For the Spydies the range is wide: from the Manix to the Cara-Cara.
In the Buck's catalog I've found the Alpha. It's huge, maybe more than the Manix.
The lock is named "walker", but I don't know what is it.

I'd suggest a custom 110. Be careful though, don't get something so pretty you won't use....:D

If you want a hard use folder that will beg for more and look great doing it go for a Cara Cara G-10 model. Get four or five and when one fails, which it won't, bring out the next.....

I was under the impression it was the mini-manix that was being discontinued. Is the full size also gonna be discontinued?

It seems you are the wiser here:).
More Cara Cara to abuse them, and one wonderful Custom 110 for the rest.
Where is my wallet?

If you just want a great user for beating up on the daily grind there are many choices for good prices.

I like the Mini Manix and Manix which you can find currently for anywhere from $95 to $120 each

The Cold Steel Ultimate Hunter is also quite good and one tough well built folder. I've had all these apart and have pictures of the lock ups on my forum and have also compared them in the review section. They are perhaps some of the strongest lockbacks ever devised.I got mine for just over $60.

The Emerson Hardwear line is not a bad folder at all. I like the Endeavor I have and feel its a very well made Seki Japan example of their fine craftmanship and lock ups. I might add that it took about ten minutes to Wave it also. Its my favorite Emerson folder currently believe it or not. You can find these for buy it now prices on Ebay for as little as $40 shipped at times.

If you want to spend a bunch of money the strongest two folders on the planet in back lock types are the Fulcrum II which is something you could literally pound into a tree once the blade is locked open and use the folder as a leg up for a platoon and something I clamped in a vice on the floor in my shop bolted to the floor and stood on bouncing with all 220 pounds of me on it when I had one to test (didn't even phase it by the way) or the Cold Steel Black Sable, which has a lock that is about as strong as it gets. Its a production technically but perhaps closer to a custom level than most and many feel its way over priced. I'd have to agree but if you are just looking for a super duty lock in a mid or back lock folder regardless of price its a solid choice no matter what anyone may say about the guy representing the company. The makers of this folder have made many of the finest knives on the planet for many years for the likes of Spyderco, Kershaw, A.G. Russell and other well known companies and designers. They do a stand up job and know how to build a folder.

If the Manix 2 is half what the original is, I'll buy 5. I just hope they keep it large and heavy. Too me, that was the appeal.
