backpack child carrier - suggestions?

I'm excited because this summer my daughter is finally old enough to take along on some day hikes (14 months). Can anyone else with small children recommend a child carrier? I checkd out my local outfitter shop and they had ones by Kelty and Deuter. I'm not really sure how to shop for one of these.

Oh - any tips for hiking with a toddler (other than general parenting stuff that I should have figured out by now)?

I have the Kelty kids..it works great...partner it up with some mosquito netting to drape over it....cause the little ones are tasty.... shade (some kids carriers provide a shade screen) sunscreen, a hat, hydration and constant monitoring are key with the little ones in the heat...they are very susceptible to the elements, and often do not show signs of exposure or shock untill late in the game...(you probably already know all of this but just thought I'd put it out there)

The best one when my kids were young was made in Alaska. I think it was called a Stroller Pack. Not light but very durable.

I have the Deuter from M.E.C and love it. Have been using it steady for 3 years and my youngest still loves it and she is almost 3 and 32lb's. It is very comfortable and well built. Lots of adjustment and ther are some accesories for it also, ie rain cover/netting.
I was going to buy the kelty wilth wheels but both the ones at the store had something or another broken on them. I took this as bad Karma so I hence the Deuter.
This pack will go to my brother soon as my girls are getting to tall for this pack. The pack is still in excellent shape.

Cheers

I have one from a company called Sherpani. We have the lightweight model. It feels about half the weight of the Deuter, and carries like a dream. It's the only one I found that is designed like an internal frame pack, and keeps the child really close to your back, for a more balanced feeling. I'm 6'1" and 210#, and the thing fits me well, despite the claims of some people who say it's sized for medium framed people only.

I'm leaning towards the Deuter. It is a little cheaper than the Kelty (which means I can get the hatchet at that store that I had my eye on!).

My daughter is 14 months and 25lbs. and the Deuter goes up to 45lbs., so I should get plenty of use out of it.
