Has anyone here tried an Iron Mountain 5500 pack from Lodestone Mountaineering?

I am looking to pick up a new pack and it seemed to be pretty nice. Unfortunately Lodestone Mountaineering went out of business, but US Cavalry is still selling them and honoring the warranty.

Thanks!

back packs are a very personal thing.

im from australia so im not familiar with the brand yopu mentioned.

but make sure you try the pack on with weights in it. to get a feel for the harness. checkout the general workmanship of the pack. use price as a guide i suppose.

i like a pack with minimal overhangs. so i dont really like all the side pockets and front pockets.

for hiking get a narrower pack which seats close to your body to improve overall balance.

Just waiting to see if anyone here has anything to say on this.

Also I just found a backpack in an army surplus shop that wasn't a standard ALICE pack. It was big and had what looked like a pocket for a sleeping bag on the bottom. Anyone know or haveany ideas as to what it is?

THe suspension system was a set of shoulder straps that seemed to be attached to a spinal rod, for lack of a better term, and then there was a basic butt pad on the bottom.

I recently purchased an Ostrom pack after seriously looking at the Eagle Becker and Large Airborne packs, and several others.
They cost a bit more, but with the current exchange rate (it is a Canadian company), I got ~40% of a custom fit pack.
They come in a multitude of variations. I had mine made of 1000D Olive Drab Cordura as I plan on beating the piss out of it.
After talking with Bill Ostrom (great guy BTW), I decided on a Windsong Ultra. It is ~4000 cu in internal frame pack that I plan on using for climbing and backpacking.
Hope that helps,
Wesley
