Well, trying to focus on "civilized" backpacking, and not being able to shoot a few squirrels for the 'ol pooch, what are some good options for backpacking dog food?

My wife picked up some nice individually wrapped stuff that the dog loved, but it was heavy. I may try some high quality dry stuff next time, and of course augment with camp meal left-overs...what have you used for your dog?

Good suggestions, thanks. I've really thought about a dog pack...that would be ideal...I'll have to try a cheap one to see if he'll like it. We do have a collapsable water/food bowl. If anything it'll slow the bugger down some with his own dog pack :D

My dog carries his food in his own pack. I put each day's food in a ziplock bag, which he uses as a food dish at feeding time. Used bags get handled like the rest of the garbage, and his pack gets hung with my food at night. This keeps the smells to a minimum. He also carries his own foldable water bowl (and sometimes water when his food load is light).

A dog can generally carry 10% of its body weight, max 15% for a strong dog for short duration, and I wouln't do 10% with a small or fine-boned breed.

My dog really loves his pack. He seems to be very proud of his adventure clothes.

I travel quite a bit with my seeing eye dog. He only eats dry food and it goes into gallon freezer bags and I either use a cordura nylon crushable bowl or a chubber. The chubber is a black rubber dish that folds up and doubles as a frisbee. Its lightweight, easy to pack and near to indistructable plus the dog loves it. Because my dog wears a harness I haven't experimented with dog packs of any size, I do have a small pouch mounted on the harness that carries pick-up bags, water bowl and other odds and ends (no knife in there yet).

A place to look if you think dog packs will work for you is www.campmor.com they usually have a good selection of dog gear and there prices are usually very good.
