I've begun working with the Outdoor Recreation program at a large university, and here are some photos from the three-day intro to backpacking course that we just got back from. I know that survival skills/bushcraft work tend to be the more popular themes here, but I figured that most of you could appreciate any time spent outdoors, even with modern conveniences.

I will say that it is a completely different experience when comparing just going out by oneself versus taking care of a group for an extended period of time.

Cheers!

Great pics. How did the trip go? Were the students all complete beginners?

great pics man... looks like a lot of fun.. i have helped out with a few of those programs in the past.. :) nice RAT knife too..:D

Maybe it's me but that water looks flippin cold to be paddling in!

Those sleeping mats look good, if a little bulky. Not seen any like that over here.

This was the first time that all but one of the students had ever been backpacking, and everyone seemed to have a great time.

The water wasn't that cold...not too warm either, though. :D

That's great! I'm sure it was an experience being a 'leader' to a group of that size. Cool blade choice. Out of curiosity, did any of the new folk bring blades?

And is the gear property of the university or something, or did you guys just decide to standardize gear when folks were purchasing new?

Looks like a great time. You never know what is going to spark someone's interest in the great outdoors. It is so cool that you all but one of the students were virgin backpackers.
Never anything wrong with showing someone that has never been before just how great it is to be outdoors. And not just car camping.

We provided tents, backpacks, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, and rain gear.

We took the Mullica River Trail...most camp shots are at the Mullica River Campsite.

I know the area well.

If you need any help in the future, I am very nearby and will donate time freely to lend a hand.

I did a canoe trip in Mullica a few years back. I had a great time.

It's amazing how reality and the perception of Jersey are completely different.

Thank you very much for the offer, PrimitiveMan. I may in fact take you up on that in the future.

Out of curiosity, did any of the new folk bring blades?

Not a one, actually. The only blades were those carried by myself and the head instructor. It was hard enough to impress upon them the need to carry enough water at the pre-trip meeting.

On a positive note, though - I think that most of them realized the importance and utility that a cutting tool provides, especially in situations such as these.

Took my first outdoor course with the Outdoor Club of South Jersey back in 1979. I have no problem helping and have a lot of spare gear.
