Backspacers

Hey everyone, I found something weird after I took apart and inspected pretty much all of my Tri-ad folders.

Underneath the spring there is a pin that gives support to the backspacer and of all 28 of my tri-ad lock folders all but the voyagers and counter points have too short pins. Some only go in one scale but most does not even reach either side. I suppose aluminum is strong enough on the G10 models but then what is the purpose of it? Is it just mine..
I hear Cold Steel doesn't have the best customer service and I live in South Africa so warranty is too much hassle for me to send it in.

I don't want to worry because Cold Steel is my favorite brand and I love the strength of it. Has anyone noticed this? Thanks for any info.

I've seen this mentioned before, but I always forget to look when I have one of mine apart. I have no idea why they'd do this. A simple solution would be to find an appropriate diameter pin stock or metal rod and cut it to the proper length to replace the factory pin. If you want to go really cheap, you could probably also use a piece of a small nail as the pin. I'm going to have to open up a few of my Tri-Ad knives this weekend and see what the pins look like.

Maybe it is just meant to hold something in place during manufacturing?

Okay cool. That seems like a plan. Guess I have some work to do then. Thanks

I made pins for my rajahs and spartan because they have grivory backspacers and I did one of my recon 1s but after all that I decided I wasn't going to make 17 more.. so I just hope that the aluminum will hold up without the pin. I just don't think it'll break if almost all of mine has this problem and I've never heard anyone complain of the backspacer breaking..

I think it's for holding the backspacer in place during assembly, as the spring will move it downward causing misalignment when trying to install the final scale. It's also for support on plastic backspacers or aluminum one's with minimal material underneath the spring.

BEWARE this pin can magically vanish during disassembly!

Excellent pix thank you, now I get it. Knives have got so much more complicated and better though since my first Barlow Knife.
