Backsprings too strong - help...

I just bought 4 Case knives from the 70's with CV blades. Did not have to pay much, and they are all in great condition. The only problem is that I have to use pliers to open them. The springs are really tight, and some of the nail marks are just too shallow and short to get a grip.

Is there some way to fix this problem?

This isn't much help, but if the nail nicks are shallow, that's a good sign they've been cleaned/buffed;)

Simple to try, but not always sucessful. Put some polishing compound under the tang, wrap the blade as to not getting cut. Work it (open and closing) while watching the tube. Once you have done it about thousand times, clean it out with soap and water, then heat it up and apply one drop of Milotec.
Good Luck

If you have a Dremel with abrasive cut off wheels you could cut the nail nicks deeper. I would first spend some time working the blade back and forth with lube in the hinge. No need to close it off all the way when you do it.
