As most of you know i'm pretty much a traditional guy and not really into tactical. However I have always loved the profile of Dan Winklers Sayoc hawk and wondered what it would feel like. So here is a light weight hawk in the style of the Sayoc. I also wanted to try out a Parang so here it is. Both are 5/32nd sawmill blade steel with green garden jute cord wrap soaked in thinned carpenters glue. Have to make some clothing for them and will post when finished. I'm thinkin copper mesh sheaths :D
The huge surprise is the hawk throws sooooo well. I was throwing from my usual distance with the spike forward and it sticks with the blade, handle up. AND, the handle can't slip :D

Nice job on both of those. I made a couple "trainers" out of Aluminum just to get the feel for a certain design, good idea using steel.

Good tactitools. I like them, but they are quite a ways from your traditional beauties.

Howard

Hey Howard, I think i'm going crazy ;-))) I kind of hate doing the same stuff so thought i'd do these as a break. I will say, this little hawk is really fun to throw.

Best regards

Robin

Here's a traditional piece for you ;-))

5/32, oh my that's thin for a hawk. What's it weigh? How stiff is it laterally?

Don't let the interrogation fool you, I like them both ;)

Hi there Scouter
This sawmill blade steel is very tough stuff. I punched about 20 holes in various different steel things, drums, and old riding lawn mower, and a model T fender without rolling the edge. I threw it about 50 times and did notice that when you throw it hard the handle vibrates when it hits the target. The jute absorbs shock pretty well even when whacking steel.

I understand. I did the camo pink hawk for most of the same reasons. I do gun shows and get the crowds you will see. They love the CQC, Tactical, and Breeching hawks. You really know my weaknesses by posting the picture of that ulu. Love your work!

Robin,

What's the equivalent of the sawmill steel do you reckon?
I'm hesitated to say L6 but it's an old piece and my memory just stuck there.

Hey Jay. All the old sawmill guys up here in the wilds say it's L6 but Kentucky who has huge knowledge says it can be but frequently tests otherwise. Whatever it is it's tough as hell. I have 4 big blade all of which are around 100 years old.

Robin

Hi Robin,

How long is the hawk and parang?

J

Hi Jay, The hawk is 13 inches to the top of the blade and 7 1/4 from spike to spike.
Sorry Jay, forgot the parang specs. 18 1/2 loa with a 13 inch blade.

Regards

Robin
