i've put off pitting the bk-2 against the bk-10 for too long. i was under the weather fri night so i was home bound and thought what better way to get rid of the sniffles than a little backyard fire...never mind it's hovering on the freezing mark and i was out of maker's mark :p

a little one-stick-fire action going on.

i tried various techniques of making curls/feather sticks trying to see if one was significantly better than the other.

a healthy pile of curls...reminds me i need to scout my neighborhood for birch trees! it was a pain making these curls with crazy hard iron wood.

my i'm-drinking-and-need-to-set-stuff-on-fire-to-make-it-even-more-fun wood stash.

the rest of the fire prep along with the only firesteel worthy to be paired with the mighty bk-2.

...and we got fire! dilated pupils (i left the lights off so my eyes were on night vision) + striking the giant firesteel = temporary blindness! gotta put on shades next time :p

...my tool of choice to keep the other hobo's away from my fire? bk-2.

very cool,

I've enjoyed any becker I've had my hands on, my bk7 is still kicking and takes the place of the rc6 some days.

my have to look into what ka-bar is doing with these nowadays.

What do you think about that BK10 vs the BK2? Looks like your 2 has a con-vexed edge, no?

Cole

Yes indeed. Inquiring minds want to know - which was the better tool for the task at hand?

As far as I'm concerned forget all the hoopla about the 'tweeners'. Ka-Bar needs to get to work and re-introduce the BK-10!

thanks. really hard to beat a becker for bang for the buck. the 'tweeners are coming soon if you haven't already heard.

Great pics, really like the fire ones.

thanks, man. fire = bushcraft tv :)

@cole - my bk-2 is not convexed, just regular old v-grind. might just be an illusion since the patina is getting worn off from use.

i liked the bk-2 better. i really couldn't tell any practical difference between the two except when it came to detailed carving (say making a figure-4 trap) where i put my thumb on the spine. the bk-10's ramp digs into my thumb right away whereas i can do those carvings with my bk-2 all day.

not surprising since ethan designed the bk-2 as a woods knife and the bk-10 is more of an urban/military survival dealio, it's named the crewman after all.

Very cool. The bk10 is my favorite.

thanks. too bad i didn't like my bk-10 as much as i thought i would after using it.

Hmmm, I didn't think about the thumb ramp. I reprofiled my BK2 and it cuts pretty well now, is why I asked.

You'd think the prybar would be a bit more "urbany."

Thanks

pure genius right there.. !!

excellent post, and goes to show you don't have to leave home to get out !! :)

thanks, rob! as an added bonus, i think i scared off my new neighbor playing with knives and fire like that in the middle of the night :p

everyone's idea of urban survival is different i guess. if i have to pry something open i have all kinds of actual pry bars...if i'm down to just my knife then i probably ran out of ammo and down to stabbing people who are trying to break into the house to steal my supplies :o in that case, i'd ditch the bk-2 in favor of the bk-10 (i'd probably would've sharpened the false edge spine as well by then).
