I got a BAD in the mail today and it's got a strange mark on both sides of the blade - almost like a flame was held against. I tried washing it thinking it might be a sap stain but it's still there ??

Any of you lads seen anything like this before or have any ideas what this may be ?

No way to tell without pics.

Was it used, or carried?
I've never seen one patina enough to notice it much. I've had one get just a tad darker, but unless it was beside a new one you wouldn't really notice.

haven't asked the previous owner. Will try get pics!

could be patina but I've never seen infi patina like this

No idea without pics.

I have yet to have anything patina my BAD yet. I have had some show up on a satin warden, but it came off with a light buff with the strop. Just a few passes. I tried to get my FBMLE to show some staining. I put it away dirty and sappy for a week, but it all came off with a good soap and water scrub.

The only rust on INFI i've ever had was on an NMFBM I used to chop up a watermelon. I left the juice on the blade for a day and it was spotted pretty bad.

Meat can give INFI a patina/stain. I've seen it with raw pork, and a cooked sausage.

best I could do with an iPhone gents

Maybe someone got trigger happy with a belt sander and ruined the heat treat along the edge...?

Did you buy the knife used? I don't blame you for being concerned, that doesn't look good.

.
My guess from the pictures and not seeing it in person, it looks to have been overheated (heat discoloration). You can always make the secondary bevel shiny with a stone. I would be inclined to return the knife and not take any chances of the heat treat being effected. :(

Looks like a buff or grind overheat for sure. Hard to tell if the edge has been messed with though. The grind looks very even. Was the knife supposed to be new?
