My house got broken into today and my knife collection was decimated. Lots of high end stuff (ZT, Benchmade, Strider, Spyderco, BRK&T, Blackjack, etc., etc.,). They will be missed. I'm going to miss those expensive knives a lot, but I'm really going to miss the ones that will be almost impossible to replace - Spyderco Ocelot and Lone Wolf T2 for instance. Still inventorying right now.

My losses are tough, but they're nothing compared to the jewelry my wife lost. She lost literally tens of thousands of dollars worth and there is a $1500 limit on jewelry on the ins. policy. Ironically, it doesn't look like there is any limit on knives.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss.

You have to read your insurance policies carefully. You may think that you bought a half-million-dollar police which is more than enough. But there are all sorts of specific limits.

Knives -- or any other object -- which has value beyond its intrinsic value generally fall under "collectibles and art" and there's a special limit for the which is usually quite low.

You can buy riders to raise these limits. But the commission on the riders is low and most insurance agents would rather not point out the limitations of the policy they just sold you.

Thanks Gollnick. I've got it covered - I'm actually an attorney. I've got a replacement policy and the replacement value of the knives is high enough.

Are you planning on providing a list of the stolen items to local pawn shops? It seems like knives and jewelry would be easy to pawn.

I plan on going to all the local pawn shops I can get to. Also keep my eye on Craigslist.

I've heard pawn shops are very receptive to reporting items they know to be stolen as it's a significant liability for them. Were many of your items serial numbered?

Sounds like great items to Pawn and if that's the case you just may see some of your knives again and the Police may be able to make an arrest.
I am truly sorry to hear this, at least you guys did not get hurt.

By the way did they steal any Firearms also?

I don't own any firearms (which is probably a good thing since there is a loss limit on those as well).

The knives were kind of kept all over, but the best ones were kept in an armoire so that I could pick out which one I wanted. I'm left with a Spyderco Gayle Bradley (a great knife) and a Benchmade 707 that I just got in the mail today.

Also - they DID miss a big knife drawer, but the best ones in there were an ESEE 6, BM Morpho and a Cold Steel Recon Scout. They also missed a BRK&T Bravo 1 that I had hidden under some jeans.

I don't know when my wife will calm down.

Sucks to get robbed. Be thankful you weren't there.

One of my wife's best friends was robbed at gun-point in her own home about a month ago. She has 5 boys and is a single mom. The younger 3 were with their dad that evening, but the older two, 16 and 18, were with her. Rather than stay in the home with the bad memories, they moved in with her mom until they could find another place (were renting). Her younger three still come over to our house after school, rather than go home to an empty house. They are still freaked out. I try not to think about the fact that they were just 3 streets over from us.

No physical harm, but I can't imagine the mental stuff that comes with that.

Hope your wife recovers from the fear.
