Bad design of Victorinox Pioneer

I have a new silver alox Victorinox Pioneer SAK and I love everything about it, except...

Except for the positioning of lanyard post (to which the keyring is connected)

When I grip the handle of the knife firmly to make a strong cut, that little lanyard post digs right into the heel of my palm very uncomfortably. It's even worse when I use the can opener, because my grip is different and it makes the lanyard post dig right into the center of my palm.

Since I don't use lanyards, I'm going to fix this problem by grinding off the lanyard post. But it would be so easy to make these knives without having the lanyard post stick up like that. If the post stuck straight out the butt end of the knife, there would be no problem.

It's a pretty often mentioned issue. And grinding it off is a pretty common mod. And it's probably one reason why a lot of Victorinox Alox models don't have the lanyard at all. However, with as many years and with as many production units as Victorinox makes, I would bet there are also good reasons they've done it that way. My guess is if the lanyard fixture stuck out the butt end of the knife, as you suggest, they would get (or have gotten ... not sure if this was ever part of the design) complaints that it got in the way of blades opened on that end, poked the user in the pocket, or something.

In any case, if you could find an old Soldier model, it's just like the Pioneer except with no lanyard fixture and a couple other very minor details. And, as I said, a lot of Vic Alox models, such as the Harvester and Electrician, don't have a lanyard fixture at all.

or find a wenger SI, has a removable bail.

Years ago, the Vic soldier had a hollow rivet like the Wenger SI. For saving a few pennies, Victorinox dropped the hollow rivet. Very poor corporate decision. One more reason I prefer the Wenger SI.
