My knees care little about bending, even a little, so when I finally got around to building the new buffer I took motor location and ease of changing belts as two of the major factors in my design approach. Up top with the motor, was the way to go, for me. I built this thing for around a hundred dollars, The H beam had been laying around here for 15 years or so. I believe it was going to be a wood splitter. I found the 3/4 rod and pillow block bearings up on a shelf in the shop. I have no idea where they came from. The motor is a 230 volt unit that was used to open a plant gait. Most of the cost was in the pulleys. I think it pays to get good ones. It makes the machine run a lot smoother. Add a couple coats of blue paint so it matches my hammer, color coordenate, the wife says, and there it is. I do love the machinery.
