Added Bird Beak Steel Heart II gallery to the site. You can thank mamun1024 for the new gallery. It was his eagle eyes that caught the errors where I placed them incorrectly in either the Steel Heart I or the Steel Heart II galleries. Happening about the same time, gravelface posted a photo of a pair of Bird Beak Steel Heart II with 10" blades. I never realized that there were some Bird Beak Steel Heart II out there. Thank you mamun1024! Thank you gravelface for the new photo to add to the site! This site is not possible without the great HOGS out there!

I suddenly feel a sense of accomplishment. Like an author being published for the first time!!!!!

I would like to thank all the people who made this possible!!!! Ed, thank you for creating the BEST website on the web. Thank you Bill for finding that knife at a gun show and posting it here for everyone to drool. Thank you Tim for bringing it to Blade 07 and letting me see it first hand and for putting up with my yearly emails and PMs harrassing you till the day you caved and I acquired my GRAIL! Thank you John for your infi black hole and keeping the second safe for me all these years!

Now the hunt has begun for the 3rd one.....I know where it is and who you are.....oh yes, it will be mine

:D

Those are actually Steel Heart 1.5's.

According to Jerry, the orig SH length was being looked at being lengthened.

A few were made with the 9'-ish blades, as shown in the pics, but the final size was decided to be the 7-ish that we all have known as the Straight Handled Steel Heart II.

When Jerry talked to me about these, he said he thought there were in the neighborhood of six floating around.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the corrections! Sounds like these were SH II Prototypes then. These are super rare if only 6 of them! More trivia!

I thought those were called the BBSH II Prototype. As Mike said, there were 6 of those. Jason has 2 (for now ;)), another Hog has 1, and the other 3 are in INFI blackholes.

My understanding of the naming of the old Steel hearts are:

Steel Heart 1 (around 6.5" blade) had a birds beek pommel, then the next Steel hearts came out were called the Steel Heart II (around 7.5" blade) with a birds beek pommel. Then the next Steel heart came out with 8" blade and a rounded pommel, and were called the Steel Heart II, for some reason. As a result the early Steel heart blades with 7.5" blade and birds beek pommel were then called the Birds Beek Steel Heart II.

Ofcourse, I'm only a new piglet, the older Hogs can correct me if I am mistaken in my understanding of the Steel Heart evolution.

Yup, from what I remember from discussing these with Jerry, the birds beak pommel carried from the original SH1 6.5", then to the 9"-ish (Jason's knife) intermediates, then to the settled upon 7.5 blade length, which was the SHII. During the 7.5" SHII blade life, the pommel was changed to the rounded version and carried through the rest of the lifespan of the SHSH II.

From the longer bladed SH "1.5", the Battle Mistress eventually evolved.

mamum1024 - neither "new" nor "piglet" apply to you any more. Hog you are, and I believe the other 9 will agree!

...

Yeah.....I believe only "new" may apply..... But that is a subjective term. Monte is the only one who just skipped Piglet!!! And went straight HOG!!!

The 3 Birds Beaks:

Same plunge line on the this 10" as the original SHI, I will photo the other one later, different plunge line.

And the other missing ones may not be in hard core collectors black holes, they may be owned by someone who doesn't even realize what they have...

Never know what Jerry sold where back in the day.:eek:

A lot of regional shows.....

Dang J you have two now??? I'd have to agree with the "I could have done without ever seeing this thread". You really do have the sickest collection of old school. Your collection is the main reason I stopped collecting. You already have all the cool stuff!!

Ron, don't blame me.....Monte is hogging all the REALLY good stuff!!!!! Besides, you know where it is if you start collecting again

I'll be back at it as soon as I am done building mama this new house... Should be done around April. Monty we need to talk :)

Not so fast Jason, I know some of what you have been hoarding over there. :)

Hi Ron, it's all HOG trickery from Jason. :p

Oh I am we'll aware of Jason's tactics. He does have quite the hoard. My tactic was to make him think he had distracted me. A little Hog Fu if you will. I'm sure you have a little Hog Fu of your own going on here too...

I say you guys settle this once and for all. Monte vs Jason an entire collection pic. That would be interesting.

Garth

I will get better pictures up as soon as the rain stops here.

Both versions 1.5

Parkerized (Old school stamp)vs Coated (sterile)
Plunge line completely different
Flat ground vs Hand ground.......best way I can describe it. I will try to capture in a photo what I mean. The rub marks near the tip are exposing a transition to the tip.....it isnt like the flat ground and it is the same as a few older ones I have seen including the SH1 from above.
