Bad News: No more sheaths from me...

Well guys, I knew the time would come sooner or later...it'sjust a little sooner than I had expected. I am going to quit making sheaths for sale. I have a few orders to fill, and I have a few sheaths that I have already made that I will sell off, but that'll be it from me.
frown.gif

Reasons? Get ready for a list! First of all, I need to concentrate on taking care of patients, and that takes a lot of time. I am trying to finish my patient numbers early so I can do an internship during my last trimester in school. That will take a lot of dedication, and making sheaths will just get in the way. Secondly, and probably more tangible, is that I have been spread really thin lately, and my turn-around times have been horrible (sorry to the guys who have orders right now). Between school, patients, and work, I have less time than I used to, which I didn't think would happen. For those who have orders with me, sit tight. I am running a 103 degree temp right now, so I'll be getting these orders filled as soon as I start to feel better.
In the next 6 months I am getting married, my brother is getting married, I have to honeymoon, I need to see 200 more patients (harder than it sounds, trust me), move to a new state, pass three more national Boards sections, find an internship, square away an associateship or figure out how to borrow another $100K to start a practice of my own on top of the $100K I will already owe the Man, and a bunch of other stuff! As you can see, sheathmaking is at the bottom of the list right now.

I have REALLY enjoyed serving the BFC community, and I will still be posting as usual. I have learned a LOT about making sheaths, and I hope they will give a lot of people service for years to come. I am sorry to leave the "business", but it has to be so. Hopefully it won't be too many more years that I will be making sheaths and selling them with my own handmade knives inside! We'll see...
In any case, like I said, thanks for some great experiences and I was elated to meet so many people and help them out. I guess if you have one of my sheaths you can be proud to own a limited edition product!
wink.gif
Maybe they'll be worth a lot of money some day!

Anyway, I'll be finishing orders out next week and filling ones that I've promised, then that's it. I have a few Wave sheaths left, as well as a couple for Benchmade Nimravus Cubs that I'll be selling once all orders are filled and I can see what's going on. After that, I'll be sifting through my materials and selling most of it off, so look for that in the For Sale board in the next month or so. I am also thinking about writing a comprehensive giude to making synthetic sheaths, but we'll see about that. Too many projects! Thanks for reading, and please always feel free to ask me questions about sheaths, etc if you need to. I don't think I dented anyone's business too much, but I guess this will leave that much more to guys like Mike Sastre, Normark, Blade-Tech, etc etc. Ciao!

Chiro,
As a person who is also spread very thin, I can sympathize. I've had to give up quite a few things that I dearly love to do just to tread water in my career. Good luck with your work and I hope you can find time later in your career to pursue this again if you still want to.

It's good that you have your priorities Chiro. I hope you start feeling better.

Hey Chiro...

Sorry to hear that..
When it comes down to it though.. You learned a skill that you can always pick up again as a hobby.

You know what goes into making sheaths,it's a lot of hard work and you made some money at it,, but more importantly,, you met a lot of nice people and earned their respect. That's far more important I think...

You do sound like you have your plate full and I wish you well in your new direction.

It was always interesting talking with you and I hope this means you are still going to be around here...

Good luck and Thanks...

Eric....

Hey Chiro75,
Best wishes to you.
Maybe I can help you out a little, eh?
Let me know what your clinic sched is and what module, etc.(email me privately)
and one more thing, think about making time to go to the Badger knife show (wisconsin) last weekend in March. You can ride up with me and join the tkc-list dinner gang for knife show-and-tell.

Sorry to hear that Chiro, but if anyone needs a sheath, Gary Grailey (G2) is the leather man, and Allen Blade makes AWESOME kydex sheaths. I dunno if he offers this as a service though. You might shoot him an email.

Chiro 75,

I hope you feel better soon! Also, I wish you the best in the future!
Sounds to me like your doing the right thing.
You made me one heck of nice Kydex sheath for my Kerver and I'll always think of you whenever I put it on my belt, which is daily!
That sheath is great...built like a tank and really a thought out design!
Someday I'd like to see you return to making sheath AND KNIVES! Take care!

Chiro75,

You're too modest to mention the Madpoet tribute page you set up among the great gifts you've provided to our community. I don't have the good fortune to own any of your sheaths or Mel Sorg's wonderful knives, but have enjoyed your posts and the tribute page -- it sets the high-water mark for what "community" can mean on this forum.

Best wishes for your (busy, ambitious) new year! Keep posting --

Glen

Chiro, sorry to hear that! I had planned on getting you to make one for a couple of my hunters
frown.gif
Well, get better, soon, and for heaven's sake wrap up this doctor stuff as soon as you can!
wink.gif
And, uh, I guess I'm the only SOB here insensitive enough to say,"I'll take one of those WAVE sheaths!"
smile.gif
Let me know...
smile.gif
(man, these smiley face icon's are fun!)
Take care, and get better soon.
Paul

sorry to hear about the situation. glad i'm getting one of those last few. don't kill yourself on making mine. i can't really use it for a few months anyway. take care of yourself before you take care of me. best of luck.

Geez, now I feel like a schmuck for asking for a Wave sheath.
frown.gif
Chiro, take care of yourself. Get better, and I'm glad to read that you'll still be active in the forum. We need your input and wit!
Paul

Chiro, good luck with your future endeavors. Along the way one has to make certain sacrifices in order to reach ones goals and the decisions are tuff. Hang in there, there's a light at the end of the tunnel. The sheath thing is something you will always go back to. Thanks for your help in the past with the sheath making. Get better soon.

Take care,
Tom

Thanks for all the kind words, guys! I will still be around BFC as usual, so don't write me off just yet. 6 more months and I'll be on hiatus from that, but hopefully I'll have some good Hawaii stories to tell when I "get back"! Pthphala (sorry for mangling it!), email me about the Wave sheath and I'll set one aside for ya...
I'm feeling a bit better. I put in a few 12 hour days early in the week, and I think I got nailed by a virus that one of my pediatric patients was so happy to pass along. Damn kids!
wink.gif
Anyway, the kicker about viruses is that you can't do a darn thing about them, especially medically, so I've been getting adjusted regularly and I'm keeping a ton of fluids in me. Sage and chamomile tea both work for the sore throat, adjusting takes care of the muscle aches, and Vaseline is keeping my nose soft and supple.
wink.gif
I found some really yummy zinc/vitamin lozenges, too, that're as close to candy as you can get (some are just awful). Anyway, the combo is helping me feel better, but it'll be a few days before I'm 100% again.
frown.gif
Happens to everyone I guess!
Anyway, thanks again for the concern, and if you want to contribute to my loan pay-off fund, just email me for info. Hell, I'll even sell nude pics of myself if that's what it takes!
wink.gif
Must still be delirious from the fever...

Congratulations and Good luck Chiro75, stay in touch. Hope you feel better.

Steve,

I'm sorry to hear that you've stopped making sheaths. It's a good thing I ordered mine before you stopped! Lucky me. :-)

Get better soon.

yeah, get better quick Chiro! i've been hit by a good flu from the VA patients who seem to think that working in a hospital makes you immune to everything and it's okey-dokey to hack right into your face; they leave the "tissue routine" at the door!! and i was lucky enough to get one of those last orders in also- for a Fowler fatboy tanto sheath, can't wait to see it!

Darn, I wish you'd have signed the excellent sheath you made for my S1. It would have become a rare collectors item
wink.gif

Seriously, I hope you'll feel better soon. If you are as good in your profession as in sheath making, I predict you a successful future.
