Memorial Day - I was deciding which Mnandi to take to an all day outdoor gathering in the countryside near San Francisco. The Buffalo Horn or Mammoth Ivory Mnandi?

I clipped the Horn on my pants and headed for the door. Following a distraction, I went pack to my knife case and swapped it for the Ivory.

Five hours later, I patted my pocket as I frequently do to make certain the knife was still there. Horror of horrors, it was gone.

I spent and hour or so searching over the very wide area of my pedestrian travels, but no Mnandi. Yikes, $450 down the drain.

Luckily, I have my knife collection listed as "Scheduled Property" in our insurance policy. For the uninitiated (including me), this means no deductible applies.

About an hour ago, my insurance company shot me a full replacement value check! Yea.

Note of caution - my insurance company (and probably yours) will only pay the "purchase" price, but generally not the "replacement cost". This is very important when buying off the forums (very hard to prove your purchase) and when dealing with customs that may have risen dramatically in value from the day you purchased it, but only an appraisal will help determine the value and then they may still not pay that "replacement" cost.

Hey a quick question for you.

A couple of months ago I tried to schedule my collection, but the insurance CO said it's covered under my general homeowners policy. I haven't dug out my policy to check yet. Did you have trouble scheduling them?

Well, there is "scheduled" property (counted outside your basic policy) and there there is such a thing they call "inventory" where the scheduled property is carefully defined. So each individual knife in my case is part of a single "scheduled" category called "knives". They actually didn't ask for an inventory, I gave it to them to give them a sense of the total value.

In theory, each individual knife could be scheduled singly.

Ouch. The Ivory Mnandi is a gorgeous knife. I lost a Umfaan a couple years ago and I won't take it's replacement out of the house without a lanyard around my belt.

Fortunately, I learned my lesson with pocket clips on a fairly inexpensive Spyderco, but almost lost a Benchmade clipped in pocket the same way.I don't know why people trust that method of carry so much as it is to easy to lose the knife.Such an interesting design, yet so poor.I'm very pleased though since carrying my knives in sheaths or pocket bottoms.
