Hey guys, getting a new grinder soon, but i am not sure if i want a KMG or Bador? Looks to me that they are about the same price, for equivliant options. I am leaning tward the KMG right now due to the 10" wheel and platten package.

Right now i make folders and not sure if i should go with the 8 or 10 inch wheel.

what do u guys think ?

any help would be greatly appretiated

thanks

dave

I have a KMG and looooooove it....no hours on a bador, so can't comment there.....i thin the tons of add-ons for the KMG would throw me in that direction, though...

I own a Bader, but have played with many KMGs. The only problem I have with the KMG (sorry Rob) is no paint or finish on it. Otherwise, you cant go wrong with the KMG on price or quality. Rob's customer service is outstanding!

My vote would be the KMG also. Heavier duty, can perform more functions and you'll have ready customer support by the maker/inventor himself.:D

Doesn't get any better than that.;)

Edited to add: Plus it's sent to you ready to customize, it in any color you want!;)

It is true the KMG has no finish and is, therefore, subject to corrosion. Bader is a fine grinder and so is the KMG. I have owned both and like some of both but would probably go with the Bader.

I must admit, I havent taken the time to paint my KMG yet.....every hour I get to be with her, i keep putting her to work!

I presently have a Burr King 960 and the KMG. I have also used the BaderII but not the III. The KMG is more ridgid than the Bader. I have my KMG set up with a 3HP Variable Frequency AC Drive and a 2.5HP 3phase motor. This allows me to run at any speed on any wheel. I took the 1.5" square arms off the KMG and replaced it with 1.5" square thick wall tubing. This cut the weight of the arm in half. I also put a new arm on each different wheel setup. Takes me about 15 seconds longer to change a wheel than it does to change a belt.

Buy the KMG and a can of paint! Spend the extra $ and buy variable speed!

If anyone has questions on Variable frequency drives let me know.

Jim

I don't think you would regret getting either one, but the next grinder I buy will be a KMG.

Between a few little tweaks I would want to special order, and knowing how great Rob is... I would be a fool not to.

While I don't often agree with that young whippersnapper Wheeler, I will this time. :p :D I've got a Bader right now, but will get a KMG next.

I own a Burr King but if I had it to do again I would get the KMG. I have personally used both the VS Bader 111 and the VS KMG. I helped take them both out of the box brand new and set them both up. The Bader was out of square on the wheels and platen and needed an hour of surface grinding on the platen to correct the misalignments. The KMG was spot on and needed no fine tuning what so ever. Robs attention to planning, welding and machine work is next to excellence. Im not just saying this because Rob gave me two free 2" wheels either, that just shows what a great guy he is! If you want paint on your KMG then paint it. I would hot gun blue mine.

I had the top of the line Hardcore and a Coots before the fire. I've had the KMG for a month or so and as far as I'm concerned its the best grinder I've used. As far as paint goes rust don't bother me but I may cold blue it just for the heck of it.

I'm thinking if I get one I will use the GunKote blue. Take everything apart, GC it, bake it, reassemble... sweet!

They're both great grinders.
I have two VS Bader B-111s and like them very much but I will get a KMG very soon. You can't go wrong with either but I would lean towards a KMG

I've had mine for 3 years now, use it outside year round and store it in the garage. When it starts rusting I dip a rag in my quench oil wipe it down and rub with steel wool or 3 or 400 grit sandpaper and wipe it down with oil again. It seems to be building up some protection and rusts less and less. I figure in 5 or 10 more years I will have a beautifully rust browned kmg the finish of which will rival the nicest of firearms. The hard part is geting past seeing that first coating of rust on your shiny new grinder.

I am using a Bader #3 here in my knife shop with all the bells and whistles that goes with it. I use the platinum and the 8' and the 10' wheel for all my grinding purposes. But there are alot out there to choose from, and that's something you must decide for yourself. You can change the speed all with the knob. 10 to 2500. This makes it great for controlling work and doing fine delicate grinds. You can check out my Bader 3 at http://my.hsonline.net/wizard/knifeshop.htm
Hope you get the one that you enjoy working on. God bless and good luck with your decision.
