Ok so I have a couple maxpedition bags, and I love them to death. This year, Instead of buying some cheap backpack that will tear before the year is over, Im going to buy something good. Im not looking for a full sized back pack, or even something like a maxped. kodiak is too big. I was kinda thinking about perhaps the mongo versipack, but I want to see what else is out there. It needs to hold:

around 2 full size textbooks
binder
couple notebooks
pens/pencils
cell phone

Thats all I can think of right now. Like I said, I like the design of the mongo, but I want to see what else is out there.

Your best bet is to check out a store like REI and see what you like the most. It's hard to recommend packs and bags because companies like to change their line-up of backpacks every year. It's very annoying because since a lot of backpacks, sleeping bags, and tents only stay in production for a few years at at time, the buyer has to assume a certain risk since there isn't a lot of information on the pack available.

for things like textbooks, school/office supplies, and for general commuting i go with messenger bags over backpacks. it all fits together better and is much more convenient. i would leave the tactical baggage for tactical stuff and the have the commuter baggage for commuter stuff.

i like timbuk2 because it is a great balance for price and durability (and waterproof). i have a timbuk2 right now that is over 6 years old and is still going strong.

manhattan portage is also reasonably respectable although (personal preference) i don't like them as much. the strap adjustment design isn't as convenient and the size/shapes of their bags didn't fit my lifestyle.

if you want to be pricier and trendier, chrome is a fun messenger bag, although it's really geared to someone on a 'cycle.

and custom bags you could try would be something like reload, bailey works, or pac design. all custom and $$, but very tough and will last a lifetime.

did i mention all of the bags (above) are waterproof? wouldn't it suck to get those textbooks/notebooks and cell phone wet?

Id suggest a gearslinger type of max-bag if your using public transport a lot.

:D

Hard to go wrong with a Maxpedition. They are built to last.

I read about this one. Although its made by Tactical Tailor, its not too "tacticalish" and designed to blend in. I think it would hardly be noticed as a campus day pack -

+1 for this!

I have this bag and love it for everyday carry and especially for travel. I hate walking through an airport with a tactical, straps and molle, etc bag. It is great low-profile, has a good laptop compartment and holds a good bit.

One caution, if you have a laptop with a really large screen (larger than 15" I think), I have heard it will not fit. Mine is not, so I can't say for sure.
