Bagheera, a guestion...

Hi Marion,

Sorry for the late answer, I have caught some nice bug that likes my throat and have been under the sheets in the weekend.

You mention the flint in "my kit" I guess you mean the small flint with the red plastic endcap the ball chain with metal striker plate?. This one I bought in 1973! when I visited New York as a 16 year old.

It works well and if you scrape some flint material on the tinder and ignite it with a fast strike you have a fire very quickly.

At the moment one can't get these small flints anymore but there are 2 sizes of flint sold relatively cheap in Holland they are from a Swedisch company and the big one is used by the Swedisch army. I saw the biggy for about $5 in an outdoor shop and it has a 1/3" thick flintrod about 3" long with plastic endcap and cord, I have two of them and it produces quit a lot of sparks. The smaller one is also about 3" long but has a 3/16" thick rod and plastic endcap with cord and metal stryker plate theis model is called Scout and is used by several scouts in our scoutingclub.

Best regards,

Bagheera

Bagheera,

If I sent you some money through your scouting friend, could you acquire one of each of those for me?

Hi Marion,

The "big" military firesteel won't be a problem because there is a shop 6 miles from here that carries it.
Marion just send me your address on my "private" emailaddress and I'll see if I can get you this one coming Saturday.
The smaller (thinner) one with the metal scraper I don't know exactly were to get then in Holland I got them directly from Sweden for my scouts.
Both are from the same Swedish company only the thinner one would not start as much fires is lighter and also cheaper.
But the $5 or so price for the big one is less then half of what they normally cost.

Cheers from Holland drop me an email,

Bagheera (Piet)
