bags - or not

It does get to be too much. A wallet, keys, change, a tactical knife, multipliers in sheath. Add a flashlight (keychain or otherwise,) dayplanner, pen/pencil, lunch, and you get a burden. Bags are OK - even a manpurse, which is where dayplanners can help. Stripping down the load works - get your house keyed they same front & back, but use a keyway they don't offer at the local Mart. Commercial keyways are a little more expensive and may require a locksmith, but the security is better. Like some have said - carry what you need to get to the others. Staging keys or cards at access points makes them less vulnerable to loss.
Be versatile - some days you just don't need it all. Assess your vulnerability to the current situation. If you plan on being out just a short time, maybe the flashlight or multitool isn't necessary. After dark, they may have priority - but drop the dayplanner, unless going to an appointment. The trick is to tailor your load to the current mission. Not too many people need to carry the whole backpack into the grocery store, unless you're biking. Then it becomes more than an accessory. }:{!
