Went to the BAKCA show this morning. Some of the interesting pieces:
- Grant Hawk was there with some of his DOG folders and KAT fixed blades. Both are interesting. But what really caught my eye was a new folder of his, with yet another lock. I will not even try to describe the lock, other than to say that it was fascinating. Pinched the hell out of me a few times when I tried to open it, which is the only bad thing to say about it. To close the knife, you don't have to touch the blade -- just slide the lock button, and the knife closes. A.G. Russell bought a lot of these new Hawk folders.
- Elishewitz was there with his new line, which like all his lines is very nice. But what caught my eye were his E-lock folders. It uses a rocker bar, and part of the bar wedges against the bottom of the blade to lock it open. Another very interesting mechanism. I asked Allen about why he's not taking orders for the E-lock, apparently these locks are just too difficult and expensive to manufacture, so he just offers them for sale now and then. He has yet another new lock on the way as well.
- Stopped by Scott Cook's table and got to handle a Lochsa. I'd seen all the pics on this forum, and thought it was a moderately interesting knife. Having handled the Lochsa in person, I'm not on the very long waiting list to get one. It's the first custom folder that I've bought in many years, I like it that much.
- Why Don Maxwell isn't talked about more, I don't know. Clean, beautiful lines, incredibly precise work. Anyone who thinks they have a folder with a smooth action, might think otherwise after they handle some of the knives on Maxwell's table. Gorgeous stuff, very well done. Don is up there with J.A. Harkins as the guys I most wish a production company would do a collaboration with.
- Saw Mayo's table but wasn't able to get close enough to actually introduce myself. The few TNTs he brought were all sold before the show opened to the public, I think. Same with the one Lochsa Scott Cook had -- maybe I need to join BAKCA next year
Overall, I think this was one of the better BAKCA shows of the past few years.
