Went to the BAKCA show this morning. Some of the interesting pieces:

- Grant Hawk was there with some of his DOG folders and KAT fixed blades. Both are interesting. But what really caught my eye was a new folder of his, with yet another lock. I will not even try to describe the lock, other than to say that it was fascinating. Pinched the hell out of me a few times when I tried to open it, which is the only bad thing to say about it. To close the knife, you don't have to touch the blade -- just slide the lock button, and the knife closes. A.G. Russell bought a lot of these new Hawk folders.

- Elishewitz was there with his new line, which like all his lines is very nice. But what caught my eye were his E-lock folders. It uses a rocker bar, and part of the bar wedges against the bottom of the blade to lock it open. Another very interesting mechanism. I asked Allen about why he's not taking orders for the E-lock, apparently these locks are just too difficult and expensive to manufacture, so he just offers them for sale now and then. He has yet another new lock on the way as well.

- Stopped by Scott Cook's table and got to handle a Lochsa. I'd seen all the pics on this forum, and thought it was a moderately interesting knife. Having handled the Lochsa in person, I'm not on the very long waiting list to get one. It's the first custom folder that I've bought in many years, I like it that much.

- Why Don Maxwell isn't talked about more, I don't know. Clean, beautiful lines, incredibly precise work. Anyone who thinks they have a folder with a smooth action, might think otherwise after they handle some of the knives on Maxwell's table. Gorgeous stuff, very well done. Don is up there with J.A. Harkins as the guys I most wish a production company would do a collaboration with.

- Saw Mayo's table but wasn't able to get close enough to actually introduce myself. The few TNTs he brought were all sold before the show opened to the public, I think. Same with the one Lochsa Scott Cook had -- maybe I need to join BAKCA next year :)

Overall, I think this was one of the better BAKCA shows of the past few years.

I just got back from that show too Joe, your right Tom sold all 10 of his TNT's before 10:00 am, we both need to join the BAKCA if we want the real goodies that sell before the pubic can get in. hehe

I picked up a Mayonized Large Classic Sebenza, Tom lightly sanded down the handles and put a fine BB on them, he added two studs and cut out the frame lock a little for left hand users, topped it of by polishing and sharpening the blade. Tom gave me a deal on it i believe because he didn't have my TNT i ordered a while back.

Tom told me he was cutting back on the TNT now and coming out with something new soon, not news to the "Mayo Clinic Club" i guess, now i know why those TNT's are selling like hot cakes in the after market.

I saw Larry Chew but he was trying to eat so i left him alone, he was sold out anyway.

Talked to Bob Lumm, he had a very nice two bladed liner lock with Ti handles that looked like a traditional slip joint.

Saw a few liner locks by Junko Fong, great work and sold out, wish i meet here.

Here's one of Jonko's

I saw Scott Cook's new Lochsa and was told it had a 8 month waiting list, nice for sure but i'm a Sebbie fan and happy with them.

Talked to Phil Boguszewski, his new flipper folders are very nice indeed, top quality in ever way i can see, i already had one that i got from Jay and Karen of ACK or i would have bought one, they open so easily you might believe they had a spring.

I had a great time, just wish i had more to spend there, way too many good makers and knifes.

Cheers!
James

Yeah, I was bummed Larry sold out so quick!

I couldn't get near the Strider table either, was hoping to check out the new folder.

It was a crowded show. I was there Sat. too. Sorry I missed you! I did introduce myself to as many people as I could. Had a chat with Scott Cook and Ron Clark, also Bob Lum and Larry Chew, and yes even Tom M for a few seconds. I am a club member, and I joined ($20 or something like that) just for the privilege of getting in that first hour. I bought a nice 4" utility or B&T FB from old timer Wendle Fox. Desert maple slabs, alternate light/dark stripes make it looked stacked. Nice colors!

I saw those new folders from Grant Hawk. Clever design, and also his idea for the opening stud (two disks in tandem, the thumb basically presses between them) was pretty comfortable IMO. Had them mounted on both sides of the spine too, so the knife was ambidexterous. I didn't like the look particularly - too mechanical for the sake of mechanics for my taste, but that's just an aesthetic reaction. Otherwise, the knife looked first rate!

What I also liked were the kitchen knives I saw. This was the first time I found myself wanting kitchen cutlery more than other pieces. Lawrence Segal had something interesting in the way of a cross between a cleaver and French Chef Knife. A few others whose names I can't think of, had considerable time invested in kitchen pieces, notably choppers (Japanese and French styles) and fillet knives. I'm poor right now, so I had to restrain myself, but there's always next year, and I hadn't before paid any attention to this genera.

Who among you (makers now) got your knife(s) photographed at the show by my friend Murray White? I've known Murray for over 6 years, but this was the first time we'd ever met face to face. Great show. I'll sure try to be there again!

I have to agree on those Segall Kitchen knives, they were nice.
This was my first show, and I was lucky enough to meet
Tom Mayo,Nifrand,Larry Chew, and a couple of other guys. All nice people. I was at Larry's table, checking out two of his folders, and I was very suprised at how smooth they open. After about two minutes a guy standing next too me showed me a spot on the knife to push, and the blade sprung open. No way to tell those babies were Double action. Those have to be the most beautiful folders I have ever seen.

Ahh, so that's where our roving reporter is at the moment...since I know the quality of his pics (e.g. my avatar), I can safely say: "what are you waiting for, post some of his pics man!"
AFAIK, Murray will be back in time so that we can do another joint review of the CKG Show (Oct 27)...

Thanks for the reviews everyone...

Here's a picture i got off Jay and Karen's site ACK!...

Link to it, sorry it's sold already

How ironic that you say that! By "it's sold already", you could be referring to ACK...as you may know, Jay and Karen sold their store to Julie Hyman last week.
