Where should the balance point be on a Bowie and a hunting knife? For example...the three similar knives that Raymond Richard displayed recently...do they all balance at the same point?......Seems like it would be hard to do if they are all the same thickness...different woods, combination of woods, guards, antler, manmade materials, etc. A Don Hanson long bowie couldn't balance the same as a bird and trout...could it? Thanks.

Balance points are going to be different on each knife. Most though will be within 1/4-1/2 inch from the guard. The longer the blade the more difficult it can be to get a nice feeling balance. A distal taper can help keep a large knife balanced. It also has to do with purpose. A bird and trout should be an extension of your hand. You should not feel any dramatic weighted area. A large chopper needs to be a bit weight forward. It is also a matter of preference. I have had customers pick up a piece and one will say perfect the next will say too heavy or too light. All a matter of balance/construction/symmetry.
