I had not had a chance to try Cypress for Bow drill fire since living in Texas. Taxodium distichum var. distichum is the type of Cypress tree that grows near swamps and other water in central and east Texas.

I took a chunk of dry dead cypress and used only a Koster Bushcraft knife. It wasn't the easiest wood, but I would feel confident in making fire with it in the bush. I would say it acted a lot like Red Cedar.

Just wanted to drop a note for those looking for wood combo's and bow drill fires.

I said above that it acted a lot like red cedar. However, my first drill was about 1.5 inches in diameter - so that may have made it a little more difficult than necessary - I will be practicing with it as I can.

interesting that you mention Red Cedar or bowdrills....I have tried it here and have not had ANY success with it, it just glazes and turns really glassy.

Bushman,

I find, with red cedar, that I have to really isolate and use the whiter portions of the wood. When I use the red stuff I have a hell of a time.
