What's the best way to get a balisong into California? Online orders? Will most online sites ship to CA even though they know these types of knives are illegal? Is it a "buyer must be informed, shipper not responsible" thing?

Please help... I used to collect balisongs, as a kid, in the early-to-mid eighties when they were legal. Now, it seems to be very hard to get yer hands on just one.

I'm interested in Jaguars, Bears, and especially a BM 42. Thx,

-Howdy

I remember that in LA, on Hollywood Boulevard (near the Chinese Theatre), there are "souvenirs" shops which sells balisong.
There's a shop which an impressive collection of bali... I bought my first Jaguar there.

that's probably your best bet.
or maybe on the boardwalk near at a beach or something. Bali's are legal here in NH, but there are at least three stores with knives on the boardwalk at Hampton Beach. That's where I got my first Jag and a rostefrei

They are illegal to buy or sell in CA, though I have seen a Benchmade Bali in the display case of a San Francisco dealer in the last couple of years. Enforcement is not a big worry apparently, because this shop caters to law enforcement professionals.

The way I have always done it is to buy them elsewhere, and drive them back to CA in the trunk of my car.

Use express couriers ( UPS, Fedex...) I ship balisongs in California and all make it to their destination with no problem

Armand, how much does the UPS/Fedex charge for the shipment to the states? And, how do you declare or what do you say are the contents of the package?

Thanks,
-Paul

You can read the California law at: http://www.trainingblades.com/mdlaw.htm

Butterfly knives are NOT illegal in California. What they go by out there is a legal "opinion" by the state attorney general, that a butterfly knife is a switchblade. But an opinion is just an opinion, I got lots of opinions and so do most people. What counts is what the court system well enforce. The federal court system has already determined that a butterfly knife is not a switchblade. That does not mean a state can not ban butterfly knifes, if they should so choose. California has a ban on a knife concealed in a lip stick case or a pen. But they do not have a ban on butterfly or balisong knifes.

It's a good idea not to carry any knife with a blade over 2 inches though. You never know when you will be at a airport or in a federal building going through a metal detector, and in that case, there is a limit on the blade length you can carry. Thanks JohnR7 www.BalisongKnife.com

I would be interested in buying butterflys, particularly a bm42 and/or some jaguars and others, from anyone who can ship it to me in CA. I am over 21. Please email me at blue_nine@yahoo.com if you can sell them to me.

thx!
