Well now that butterfly knives are so popular I was thinking that someone out there may be able to produce a blisong training tool. With the 42"s comeing out with Ti handles it might be possible to approximate their weight with injection molded plastic. The blade could be be any cheap untempered steel maybe even heavy guage sheet metal. The key part of this whole project would be in the pivots but I guess that you could find an off the shelf brass bushing that could be molded into the handles. Put this all together and price it to compare with cheap bali's and there might be a market?? I would take the first one.

many people will slap you silly fo suggesting a Bconcept of a Bali trainer.. however I personally think this is a neat idea.. mainly cause I want to have a trainer as some means to have a relatively safe knife sparring duel you know.

many people have told me that they sen in mail to BM suggesting a dummy blade so we migth see one in the future. a 42D.. what a concept

I was wanting to by a jaguar for practice when the idea occured to me that it might be simple to manufacture a quality trainer since the pivots would be the only important part. Also with a trainer you could practice in public places such as parks or at the office, in front of the police station or on school campuses. Anywhere you dang well wanted to. A real fine trainer would make a suitable baton in a pinch. As far as slapping me - careful sharp edges!

I think the idea of a dedicated trainer is absolutely necessary if we expect the rest of the world to discover what we already know.

I don't expect Benchmade to come out with something like a 42D, despite the fact that we would all buy one tomorrow. The new folks we're looking to recruit aren't going to want to spend the money. Why? Because they don't know what we know... that a trainer is essential. They are going to want to buy one knife, and it will be a BM42 or 42S. They aren't going to be patient enough to buy the trainer and then buy the 42. Remember that BM is not going to retool for a new handle material and blade... conceptually they'll want to put a hard plastic/dull metal blade into their titanium handles. Which means no significant price break for people who just want to try it out.

While BM might eventually produce a 42D just to humor us, I think what we REALLY need is a trainer that kids/adults can pick up for less than 30-40 bucks and learn all the important stuff without needing surgery or neosporin! Then these folks will want to buy a real knife like the BM42.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that a trainer, besides being a great training aide, is also a great recruiting tool.

But man, what I wouldn't do for a 42D. My dream is to have a kit, with 4 matched and color-coordinated handles... a torx kit... and 3-5 different blades... all in a satin-lined case. (Yes, I know the you can't substitute blades yourself. Let me dream!)

Bowie, Weehawk, Trainer, Kris, Tanto. That would be soooooo cool.

Ramius -

you got that right! I'd only add one more blade to that lined case you described....a scimitar!

Ramius.. Your dream is also the dream of many.. being fm the old school where I used to play with 'hop up' model cars and always enjoy 'souping up' my toys, i am there with ya..

actually there was once a custom maker who advertised in balisongxtreme back in the day that he was going to do that...

You need to be rather careful about something like a training knife in public. Even that may be illegal because someone may not be able to tell the difference between a real weapon and a fake. In many states that prohibit concealed carry of firearms, it is equally illegal to carry a credible fake gun.

As Sniperboy pointed out, though, training knives have great utility in knife training and sparring.

Good training knives are hard to find and I'd welcome any addition, especially a balisong.

Balisongs -- because it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing!

I made myself a trainer, it was real easy. I bought the cheapest balisong I could find (7 US bucks something), took a (hmm, what´s a normal size power tool that works like a dremel called in english, in German it´s a "Flex") "power tool abrasive disc handheld grinder", and ground off the point and the edge. Be careful: Wear safety goggles and working gloves, fix the knife properly and don´t grind off the kick of the blade. If there are sharp edges after initial grinding, polish them off as well.
As per now, the trainer has worked ok, given the disposable-style cheapo quality of the knife. By the way, I´ve never managed to break any pins, no matter how cheap the blade, only a few broken handles.

If a bali trainer __was__ acceptible in public places, it would be cool to one day see balisong manipulating street performers waiting for the crowds going home after a Cubs game. Id be the first to leave a tip.
