Hey, I'm new here. I'm a senior in high school and just recently discovered the joy of balisong manipulation.

anyhow, i had a few questions that i hoped some more experienced of you could help with:

1. Do most colleges/universities have rules against students having knives in dorm rooms, on them, etc? I have no clue about this, really. Of course I'll bring one, I just want to know if I should expect to have to hide it or not.

2. Right now I have a POS cheap chinese knife that is about to fall apart, I've been playing with it hard. Obviously the 42 is miles ahead of this, but are they super-durable? I know they're new, but does anybody have a guess as to their life span if used hard, maybe even abused a bit?

3. Sheaths. Most people (from what little I have seen) appear to prefer a horizontal or near-horizontal carry near the belt? (Clay - nice concealex work back there!!!

) Would I be good to just start off with the cocoon, or does anybody have a better suggestion?

That's about it, thanks, sorry if I've raised old threads. I went back for about 4 pages looking at random posts with interesting subjects, so I may have missed one. I'll look more later....and by later I mean right now...

Hey there PeaceFrog, and welcome to the forums, and the balisong world.

I just recently moved into a dorm, and am actually having great luck in terms of having my knives here, but keep in mind they are illegal on every and all school campus'. I got lucky and found a couple of my residency advisors playing with knives one night, got talkin, and since then havnt worried about anything from my automatics to my bali's, but still, watch out.

As to the Benchmade 42, i would think it will stand up to about anything. I havnt had mine long, but like any high-end knife (this being probobly 100 dollars more than the china-cheapy you have), it is made for extreme use. I dont know what your deffinition of abuse would be, but with all the crazy stuff i do with mine, i have never been worried about actually damaging the knife except for scratches.

When is comes to sheaths, i dont even use one. I have a kydex that i like a lot, but simply dont use much. When i do, i either have it horizontal on the back of my belt (against my back), or on a chain hanging from my neck. Otherwise, when i carry it, i simply slip it into my pocket.

Hope i could help, and enjoy!!

this is a good thread that all newbies should see.

anyway, I wouldnt carry mine around school unless it was securely out of sight (out of mind). as for colleges, I'd assume they'd assume that you'd know not to draw your knife innapropriatly or something. Just dont draw attention to it and i'm sure you'll be fine.

I believe the BM42 can take quite a beating for a quite a while

and I'm probably going to get some concealex and just make a sheath myself, so I dont know what to tell you. I'd prefer horizontal carry, but I cant get my hands on a horizontal sheath

The 42 is built like a tank. I wouldn't worry about the 42 falling apart anytime soon at least.

Whether it's legal or not, doesn't matter. Just don't be caught doing anything you shouldn't be.

So, can you stab through a quarter with a '42?

The bent tip of my Jag pisses me off(it's broken too, and I've been too lazy to fix it, not to mention I can't manage to break the other pin)

Hey PeaceFrog, welcome to the forum.

The 42 will serve you well for many years. That you can count on. "Super-durable" is an understatement.

As for the sheath, it's a matter of preference. I suggest getting a regular cocoon type sheath and alternate weekly where and how you wear it, just to get the feel of the different choices.

One week it's horizontal opening back, the next week horizontal opening front, then vertical, then behind the back, etc. But make sure you give each position at least a week......... really get a feel for the positioning.

I really like the way Concealex performs(thanx for the compliment by the way). It allows for so many more carry options. Granted, you wouldn't want to use it for your show type Balis, but for the users, you can't beat the stuff.

getting 'em open
is half the fun!

Why would you want to stab a quarter? Do you have problems with gangs of quarters molesting innocent people? We have our loose change problem under control here.

Doubt is an uncomfortable condition,
but certainty is a ridiculous one.

Rules will vary from campus to campus. Mine has no problem with knives in the dorm as long as the blade is 6 inches or less (though if I carried anything that big around I would be breaking Baltimore law . . .) and there's a loop hole in the campus rule book that doesn't classify them as weapons illegal to carry around campus.

The basic rules apply, check the college's student regulations, city laws, state laws, and don't do anything stupid with them. So long as you do that (things like keeping them in drawers during a room inspection, when not in use, etc.) you shouldn't have any problems. After all, more students are hiding beer in their dorm rooms and not getting caught (to keep things in perspective).

I go to a regimented school. All the freshmen are required to carry a knife on them which is issued here. So my school is a little different. The only thing we can't have is a fixed blade(of course, no autos or bali's). I still keep my autos and bali's in my dorm room locked up. Here, every room is give a copy of the Rules and Regulations, so everything is spelled out pretty clearly. I don't know if they do that at other schools. Anyhow, just don't start doing something stupid with it when you get drunk, like running down the hallway while holding the thing opened up. You get the point.
