I know that people dont like Balis because they have a bad rep, and cause of the media. But does anybody know how many crimes have actually been commited that involved a Bali(besides possesion of one) compared to like kitchen knives or screwdrivers or something?

Depends on who you are, if your us you see the realistic stats.
If your one of those anti-weapon law makers you flip the stats.:D

Unfortunately Kyui is right. Politics are all about who can screw you over, or who you can screw over.Period. In this case we're the ones getting screwed over. We got to flip that around just like they do to our knife and gun stats.

Some of my favorite shows are "COPS" and "AMERICA'S MOST WANTED" and whenever a knife is used I have only seen kitchen knives or older pocket knives, I have never seen a bali or an auto. It is just the "out-of-the-ordinary" that people are afraid of, balisongs and autos are different from traditional folders so people are skittish around them.

It doesn't seem to matter if those in power see the sense in what they're doing or not. They know they can't ban kitchen knives. They know they can't ban screwdrivers. So they go for an easy target. Us. Simply because there are fewer of us to fight back. That's how it's always been.

A greater percentage of the stabbing incidents here in the philippines concerns a balisong. It's the popularity of the knife that most gang bangers carry balisongs. Knife stick-ups or hold-ups usually is a balisong. That's why even here the balisong has gotten a bad rep. :(

I have a story, this was about 4 years ago. We got into a skirmish in front of our house from a bunch of drunk guys walking along. Me and my friends were also drinking, so it's plain to see it eventually got into a fight. My friend got stabbed. Luckily, the police caught the guy who stabbed my friend and brought him to the police station. So i also went there to make a statement. I found out that the guy who stabbed my friend used a balisong. The sad thing is inside the drawer of the investigator all the knives in there as evidence for several other crimes were balisongs with an exception of an icepick.

The balisong still haven't got any heat from the government, probably since it is a part of our culture. I hope it stays that way.

I'm sorry for your buddy. Over here, most of the stabbings are done with kitchen knives because it is the most available thing. Most of us that carry high quality knives do it for defensive and not offensive reasons. We have to change how the public views armed citizens and show them that we are law-abidding and decent folks.
It ain't going to be easy, but we can do it.

Violent Crime
There were an estimated 1.5 million violent crimes during 1998. The rate of 566 violent crimes for every 100,000 inhabitants was the lowest since 1985.
All individual violent crimes (murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) declined in volume and rate from the 1997 levels.
Data collected on weapons used in connection with violent crimes showed personal weapons (hands, fists, and feet) were used in 31 percent of all murders, robberies, and aggravated assaults, collectively. Aggravated assault accounted for 64 percent of all violent crimes in 1998; robbery accounted for an additional 29 percent; and murder for the lowest number1 percent. Firearms were used in 25 percent of violent crimes; knives or cutting instruments in another 15 percent, and other dangerous weapons were involved in 28 percent.

Eighty-three percent of assaults on law enforcement officers during 1997 were committed with personal weapons (hands, fists, feet, etc.). Twenty-seven percent of these assaults resulted in injuries. Eleven percent of the officers were attacked with other dangerous weapons; of these officers, 29 percent were injured. Firearms were used in 4 percent of all assaults; injuries resulted in 15 percent of these incidents. Two percent of the assaults were with knives or cutting instruments; 19 percent of these victims received injuries.

John,
Does anybody know what part of those knife incidents was with kitchen knives, and the break down of pocket knives.
Thanks for the stats,
Reed

Thanks for the numbers John. If 2% of the assaults used knives, then Balis couldnt have done that much at all. The goverment just needs to ban something.

It seems that here, the majority of stabbings or other bladed assaults are done with kitchen knives, screwdrivers, homemade shanks, ice picks, etc. On COPS a couple times I've seen episodes where stabbings were done with slipjoint pocketknives...in one case, a man killed his own son with a regular Swiss Army knife. And I've heard that, in the past, Barlow pocketknives were often carried as weapons. But nowadays, it would seem that fewer people in the population at large carry any type of pocketknives at all. I'm sure there are also a number of stabbings done with Buck 100-style knives, due to the fact they are still very common on belts.
Haven't heard much about switchblades or balis.
Jim

if there was only a way we could all come together to legalize bali's I would be fore all the way. let me see a show of hands that would like to at least see someone trying to rise up like a petition to legalize them.
