Anyone know how these hold up? Specifically this one:

I'm not looking for Benchmade quality, but do they handle better than a Bear or a Jag? I think this has to be the prettiest bali I've seen for under $100 and at that price, I won't be afraid to use it.

I don't see why you would be afraid to use it. Yes, the blade will probably hit the handle, but oh well-That is just the Philippine style. I have a 5in. Brass Filipino that I like (and use it) a lot. They are below Benchmade but definitely above the more inexpensive production ones. Good luck-

How does the blade hit the handle any more than another bali? Still don't quite understand what you mean.

There is a thing on most balisongs that prevents the actual sharp part of the blade from contacting the inside of the handle, it is called the "kick". If you look at the blade of one of your balisongs just where the sharp edge starts (not the tip, other end) just below that is the kick, it sticks out the side. If that description sucks (and it probably does) just look at this:

See how the FHM balisong doesn't have the kick below the sharp edge but the 42 does?

Hope this helps...

Look at the bottom right part of the knife in this picture, that is the kick, it sticks out the furthest to contact the handle and prevent the dulling of the blade (directly to the right of the "reserved" symbol):

I see what you mean. After I posted, I took out my Jag and noticed that the blade is indeed 'recessed.'

David2584,
I know, I know, save up for the 42. But I'm actually saving pennies and searching the couch for change. I just thought I'd save $25 and buy an 'honest-to-God', Filipino bali.

Me and my expensive-ass habits!

OK, How about SKM's?

Are they any better than the American/Taiwan mid-pricers? That Briar Wood is very pretty.

Re: SKM's...they are very good looking with the briar wood inserts but I found them to be alittle fragile. Actually my first love is the BM but I've had my eye on a couple of those blades at Balisong.com also. Just waiting for Santa!

The Inox brand that SKM sells is also very thin handled.

Catch you on the flip side!

>>Well, if you do the math, that knife is $75 + $12 shipping which is $87 total.

That Bali has been finished off and polished up real nice. I have one I am offering for $45, but it needs some fine sanding and polishing up to get it to look it's best. Maybe I will get a chance later on to work on it and then I can sell it for more

While the topic of kicks is still somewhat fresh I have a quick question (comment); my 30s really has no kick, it goes straight from the sharp edge down to the horn, is this common or does anyone else have this on any of their balisongs (BM balisongs), it is not a 2nd:

Thanks.

If you look closely at your picture you will see that the there is indeed a kick, although a small one. It is the top of a radius that starts at the horn and comes back down to the edge of the blade. This coupled with the fact that the handles are tapered, and get 'deeper' towards the latch end, keeps the edge off of the inside trough of the bite handle............IMHO

Thanks for the offer JohnR7, but whatever I buy is going to take at least another month of searching the couch and hawking my old comics.

I might try making a bali soon. Went out and bought a small drill press last night so now I have pretty much all the tools I need. Now I just need to invest in some ambition.

>>Well, if you do the math, that knife is $75 + $12 shipping which is $87 total. I have nothing against FHM's, but it really pays in the end to just spend the extra 10 bucks for the 42. My opinion anyways... <<

Dave.... Where did you find a 42 for this price?

I think he's probably referring to the $109 at 1SKS.com and just exagerating a bit to make his point.

Hmm. I've seen repeated references to $108 BM42's but I just checked the price at 1SKS and they're listing for $129. Is anyone carrying them cheaper? (Not buying yet anyway, just curious) I'll probably order one after the holidays when I have money and they've had a little more time to iron out the production problems I've been hearing about...

Yeah, when I look at it from the side I can see an ever-so-slight kick but it's form is more noticeable from a head-on view. It's certainly not as pronounced as my 42 or 45. Actually I think my keychain balisongs have more of a kick than the BM 30s
smile.gif

What's really sad is that I can do a full finger twirl with my keychain bali's, I can also do aerials
biggrin.gif
Once I buy some software I'll take some videos of me doing twirls and aerials with "the wee people" (what I like to call the keychain bali's).
