Is it legal for me to bring my fishing license and fishing equipment, travel outside the city to purchase a balisong (butterfly) knife (with a 4" blade) and bring it back to NYC? The knife will be kept in the box with the fishing equipment at all times. (I do not plan to use it, it's just for collecting)

Would this be legal in NYC/NYS?

If you where to be charged with a gravity knife than a fishing license will cover the charge .....there is always the "dangerous knife " charge, but that would most likely not be used. There are five case laws in NY ( not NYC) where the judge has determined butterfly knives Not to be gravity knives.......NYC still feels they are, but since five other NYS judges have declared them not to be, you are in good standing. There are a few LI stores that openly sell them here, and it is the same law....The case law has determined them not to be gravity knives solely based on their lack of locking open without additional action by the user....

If you are asking about where the stores are? I assume that is what you mean. There are three that I know of. The first that I was at yesterday is T & T gunnery in Seaford ( Nassau) it has a few with a nice Benchmade one in the case (516-221-7380), the next is about a mile away on Sunrise Hwy called the Swordsman ( a few blocks from rte 135--east of it). The last is a dealer with two locations one in the Tricounty Flea market in Levittown, and a full store location called Geniue Issue in suffolk county....T & T also sells autos to police....let me know if you like them

I passed by Genuine Issue a few days ago and thought they looked closed. I wasn't 100% sure, but it was a saturday afternoon, no cars in the lot and the signs seemed to be taken out of the window. I might be wrong, I was also keeping my eyes on the road. I have seen a BM42 in there one of the few times I was in there though.

I was at their location in Tricounty Flea market Today and they are there. The both locations are owned by two women who run both spots. They switch different days at different locations.......I have not been to the GI location in a while myself, but they did say they had a few knives I was asking about at their other location a few weeks back....
