Can anyone here tell me if this type of knife is leagal to carry in florida with a ccw permit? The website said "knives" along with other weapons for item that can be carried with a florida ccw permit but diddn't say what type of knives. If anyone here in FL. or elsewhere can claer this up for it would be great thanks.

If the knife is illegal to carry openly, I doubt it would be legal even with a CCW permit. Check out the knife laws forum and see if there is any more info there.

In FL, a CCW is for the purpose of carrying concealed WEAPONS, meaning any catagory of weapon, edged or firearm, any caliber, any bladesize, (swordcanes ect.), and how many of all the above is up to the permit holder, as long as they are kept CONCEALED...and not displayed in anyway that would otherwise threaten a citizen.

There's also restricted areas you can't carry even if permitted, banks, fed buildings, postoffices, airports, and bars, etc...

Some other states only allow for what is issued with the permit, not so in FL...discluding fullautos, sawed-offs, and switchblades, which unless you hold a class 3 Fed license, would be in violation of Fed restrictions, you can pretty much carry whatever you'd like.

Carry it and don't worry about it!

I hope you take your own advice...

If you gotta ask, then chances are, you probably shouldn't. Even if something is technically legal, it's also up to whatever LEO who's stopping you whether or not something is going to be confiscated.

Example... in NYC, one can carry a knife with a blade up to 4 inches. However, if you're dressed a certain way, or in a certain neighborhood, the officer can deem that you're creating a hazard or "up to no good", and take it... if he wants to further cause you grief, or if you raise a stink, he can stick a bag of weed in your pocket and the issue of the knife is now moot. You might say that stuff don't happen, but it happens more than you think.

Next time this happens to you, call me. I have friends that work in the CRB and in the IAD. Cops that increase their own knife collection through theft is not my kind of cops.

It doesn't happen to me... I got enough courtesy shields and PBA cards to add another inch to my wallet, and enough names to drop. Also, I've got a nice conservative haircut and wardrobe and a pair of glasses to boot.

What I'm referring to is not the taking or stealing of knives as opposed to giving an overzealous cop a reason to book you and drop something else in your pocket to make it stick.

That's my point. If the knife is legal carry, the cop has no right to take it. Regardless of what the person looks like. Profiling is against NYPD regulations, as is improper search and seizure. And if he further compounds his wrong doing by planting evidence, that pushes all my buttons against an overzealous rouge cop. Lived through enough occurances of being hassled by them during my Chinatown days in the 70's that it seriously still bothers me.

Chapter 790 of the Florida statutes clearly seperates
a "common pocketknife" from "weapons". This leaves as to whether
a butterfly is a weapon ( generally not the case ) the
one stipulation being you cannot carry it "concealed",
which requires a $117 plus fingerprinting fees permit ( which also
allows you to carry a firearm "concealed" ) I think it's a
stupid "law" meself. If you've a knife on your person then I
don't see much of a difference if it's concealed or not

Just beware if you intend to carry an auto, as it's been defined as
a "self propelled knife" in the case of State v. Darnyani here.

Get a good ballistic nylon sheath to carry it on your belt & you
won't have a problem. :D

AET :D

I must say I've neer had any experiances with cops like the ones described in this thread but I've heard of them. Being from up north I woulden't doubt any of them there are cops out there who shoulden't be cops they are more like the criminals they should be catching They give all cops a bad name period! The fact is most cops aren't like this and basicly if my knife is leagal then a cop has no right to harrass me about regardless of what I might look like. This kind of deccision making should be up to an individual cop. If an item is leagal its leagal! You would be shocked how many cops don't even know the laws where they live/work.

That being said it's a sad day in this country when the police think they can just do whatever they please without fear or reprisal. you know there was a time in history when "the police" were allowed to make deccisions about who was "up to no good" and an "public threat" it was nazi germany circa WWII.
