ive done some research a few says that gravity knives are illegal and under it it says butterfly/balisongs are not considered gravity knives so does that mean that it is legal then i go on to another site and it says that they are illegal and a few more sites having a question mark anyone know a definite answer? a few officers also told me as long as its not over 4 inches and a few say knives are illegal altogether in new york im really confused.....

Call your District attorney and ask him first about : Carrying one, and possessing one, these are two different things, if it's positive try and get it in writing, laminate it and carry it in your wallet, if it's not, then just don't do it or don't get caught.

Bali's are OK to own, not to carry. The cops will not even look at a piece of paper. They WILL arrest you, unless they want the blade for their self.

In NY ,other than NYC, the courts have ruled them " not to be gravity knives", but never read that to make them legal. In NY there is the famous "dangerous knife" charge that can be applied to butterfly knifes. The NY Attorney General has warned mail order companies that they will be sued for sending them to NY.......They fall into a strange area of the law for sure....

i grew up in nyc till i seen the light so to speak and moved down south in order to enjoy carrying a handgun or knife.in the city i wouldnt even try or dare myself in carrying anything but maybe a small sak on me or risk getting harrassed or locked up by the police.dont know much about upstate but overall not a good state for gun and knife laws.
