balisong organization

alright, everyone. here's an idea.
what do you all think of a balisong club of some type? some type of organization not intended to replace BFC, but to help the field of balisongs to grow into its own entity, instead of a subset of "general knives."
check out the bottom of this thread for the beginning of the idea:
http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum47/HTML/001837.html
so how about it? we could start with a small site, i guess, with a membership sign-up form, and maybe eventually a searchable database of members. I think it would help give balisongs and balisong collecting some more exposure, perhaps, by raising it up to the level of a BFC-type organization. at first it would only be one small site, but maybe other similar organizations would develop (much like bladeforums.com and knifeforums.com coexisting). eh?
peace.

Sounds great to me. Similar thing like this have been suggested in the past; such as the bali ring and the balisong mentioned in the other thread you have listed. Do you have suggestions on what the website would contain for members?

I'm all for it. I think it would be a great thing to have a Membership and a Newsletter.

And John, you have a very nice site. I wish my pics were up to the level of your site.

And, I have to thank you for putting the info up there about the Titanium "Bali" Ring, I might have to pick one of those up, that is a really cool ring. I missed the thread when it was running in here...

I'm glad this topic came up again. I think a webpage is a great idea. But what can we offer with a member's webpage that isn't already available through the other great sites? That's what we have to figure out.

I think a big part of it would be a registry of enthusiasts. I have yet to meet someone(in person) with any interest in balis. A registry of email addresses and approximate locations would allow people like myself to find others locally. THAT would be worth putting together. Along with that, we could possibly have a submissions page, running a list of moves/techniques from members. I like this idea so much because there are so many subtle techniques, from different people (and I've gone through every trick on Clay's sight

).

Along with this, of course, t-shirts or that "mystery item" (ring/pin/special bali) that we could all carry.

There was a good list of rules someone came up with in an earlier thread... I'll try to find it.

We used to have a "club" back in the old days, but it was just local...mainly because there was only one store around that carried balisongs. There weren't all that many of us that used them anyway.
As far as a new club goes...forget the "fight club" stuff..that's boring. There should be basic rules though.
#1 Don't break any laws (unless absolutely sure that they aren't inforced or you know there's no way you'll be found out).

#2 You can manipulate for show, but always do it in an area where you have plenty of room to work, and there's enough room for any observers to be safe from flying or falling balisongs.

#3 Don't pull out the balisong for any absolutely useless reasons (such as using it to spread stuff on sandwiches when there's a perfectly good butter knife handy).Showing off is excused, since chances are you might get someone else interested in the balisongs.

#4 Don't let any rookie play with your knife unless it's a dull/taped one normally used for practice. This will cut down on litigation problems and aggravation. It will also cut down on damage to the knife.

#5 You can talk about the club, but don't go around bragging/insinuating that you're the best in the club...unless you can actually prove it.

#6 Actively attempt to get more people interested in the balisongs. The more people who use them, the better our chances of getting stupid laws revoked in the future.

#7 Actively try to help teach newbies whatever tricks you've learned that helped you to learn manipulation techniques. Also help them learn whatever they haven't learned yet.

#8 Try to instill good habits and rule/law abiding into all other balisong users you know. The fewer "idiots" using balisongs the better (this means people that would/could cause more stringent knife laws to become reality).

#9 Use the balisong and your skills with them wisely.

This list should be enough..although there's always room for a few more (as long as we don't end up with a huge amount...then it wouldn't be fun anymore).

I thought it was MacCanine. (thanks again) I would have posted a link to the thread, but it became hopelessly off-topic from the beginning

. These rules are great, although they won't carry the club by themselves. They're more of a Code of Conduct then anything.

One of my very good friends owns and runs one of the local ISP's. I'm going to talk to him about maybe cutting us a deal on webspace or even page design. Ever since I started flipping, he's been interested in being interested about Balisongs

. I'll see what he thinks of the idea.

great, blasto! now we're cookin' with gas! heh.
as to features... let's see...
i think it'd be a good idea to come up with some sort of searchable database of members. we could add such tidbits as name/handle, location, email address, etc.
we'd have to find some sponsors to help us pay for the site. banner ads from bali companies, etc.
we could organize gatherings as well (preferably on private property so we can all flip together
wink.gif
). and since we might have a wide distribution of member locations, we could hold them at different locations depending on who lives where.
i think that the main purpose of the site would be newsletter-like, or at least that's what it would evolve into. it would be a communication tool for all of us.
any other ideas, please post!

I'm a member of Isuzuweb, an international Isuzu sportscar association. Members are spread across the globe and it's run very much like I'd like to see ours done. There's a regular newsletter (actual mail, not email), and invites to different events. Even a few discounts. Now the discounts may be a little ways off for us, but everything else is pretty easy. And of course we can even do the whole t-shirt/hat/mouspad thing, but that'll come later.

What we really need now is the thumbs up from more people in this forum. This idea can't fly without joined interest. So what do you say guys... if there WAS an organization in place, would you be intersted in joining? Like I've said before, my time and resources are available for this, but I'd like to get the approval and help from some of our more experienced and knowledgable forumites. I'm usually don't get so gung-ho about this sort of thing, but I really don't want this idea to die.

Guys-

"If you build it, they will come." I think there is enough interest in this, but someone (Blasto or alex ?) must go ahead and do it. I'm not willing to put any work into it (now) because I'm too lazy, but if you guys make it into something somewhat meaningful, I'll join. But enough talk... this is the 2rd or 3rd thread about this subject; I surmise people are tired of responding to these types of threads unless it really looks like it will happen.

yes...
alright, blasto. i know a bit about dreamweaver (on a macintosh), which is a web page builder, but i haven't got suitable web space. right now i'm rather busy, though. perhaps towards the end of the summer i will be able to devote time to the project. by the way, does anybody know if dreamweaver works cross-platform? we could use BBedit, which i think does, but i'm not good with it.

You're absolutely correct Penguin. I guess I'm one of those guys who looks one too many times before jumping. Well, it's time to sh*t or get off the pot.

I talked my buddy (Joe Kerman) and he said $20 a month for a domain name and hosting with 100mb of space. I think that's pretty good considering that he provides some of the best service I've seen (not just being a good friend here, he's picky about his equipment). I'm going to go searching for domain names right now. Feel free to drop any suggestions for domain names as more and more are already taken these days.

More to come...

Alex, the more I look at it, the better this is looking. I used to program (as a hobby), but I've never done a webpage. Do you think this is something you may actually be interested in helping with? I have other people who may be able to help with page design, but if you feel it's something you're up to we can talk more. And if its just a matter of laziness, believe it or not, I understand. Don't feel the need to volunteer yourself, if you're not going to enjoy it. But, ideas don't take any work at all, so keep 'em coming!

Alright, I did not want to say anything until I actually had something up, but I have already begun working on something like this on my website. I had the idea a little over a year ago when I began my first balisong site, (hence the name balisong "fans") but I was not sure if the response would be very high, so the project got moved to the back burner.

I am in the process of adding a feature profiling balisong enthusiasts. I had imagined showing a picture of the person, their name, bladeforums username, and some history on the person (age, where you are from, how long you have been into balisongs, what was your first balisong, balisongs in your collection, what sparked your interest in balisongs, etc.) I will upload what I have done so far and I will post a link so you guys can tell me what you think.

I am willing to donate my services to build the site (my second favorite pastime is working on websites). For the time being, I am willing to also donate webspace for the site (I get 100 megs, however I am only using about 8 right now with my website.) In the future, as the site grows, we would need to move it somewhere else, but this at least gets us started.

Sounds really good,Payback.

I think we have enough interest in here from most of the balisong addicts
