Balisong Speed

I've seen some threads about balisong openings speed. How do you measure the time it takes to be opened ? Do you use a chronometer to evaluate the time it takes ?

I think it's very difficult, even if it's a friend who handles the chronometer, to be precise, mostly when it is a question of 1/10 of seconds.

Do you know if there have been some "scientific" studies/papers on that - the average time it takes to do a double flip, a single flip, a latch drop,... the best time... the speed of the handle (mph)...

It would be great if someone (of the community) could have access to a scientific laboratory where they have those high speed cameras/recorder which, like a stroboscope, allows to see each phases of a move (they often study animal moves, or sportsmen moves). It's also a good mean to measure precisely the speed and the exact time to perform the technique.

What you do is get a computer microphone and record the sound of it opening, you can use a beep as a signal to start. You then play it on your computer and measure it that way.

Accurate timing _is_ a bit of a problem. I've found that using a microphone as suggested works well for most things. Maybe we should build a tricked out version with contact sensors and accelerometers, but that would be just _too_ geeky.

As for speed, measuring linear speed (MPH) doesn't make much sense since the handles/blade are rotating. It would make more sense to measure angular velocity, but even then, the motion of the balisong is more complicated than just rotation.
