balisong vs regular knife

Regular knife wins. Balisong takes very fine dexterity to open quickly.

Get a waved knife.

Bali has a stronger locking mechanism and are flashier to present. Scares the sheeple.

Regular as in Folder, more legal friendly in most states, most are less expensive than bali's, is not a fixed blade.

Regular as in fixed blade, Stronger than any broken knife design, better for all self defense purposes vs broken knife designs, Take up more space.

Read CMs post. They are not as good for self defense because of deployment. Also illegal to carry most places.

That said, they can be great edcs if you don't mind the scared sheeple. One hand operation, plenty of blade usually and a great "lock". Also the most fun.

how much better is it at self defense?

Knives aren't good (or bad) at self defense. That is the responsibility of the person holding the knife.

Balis are fun to watch...when other folks twirl 'em around. Always reminds me of the old Harrison Ford movie, where the "guy who rides camels" (fill in your own PC)... is threatening to slice Ford with a big sword, so Harrison Ford pulls out his handgun and shoots him dead center. It's always funny to watch. Form doesn't win over substance...
