I had always wondered about carrying a bali and throwing knife and occasionaly I do. I was wondering if anyone else would think this to be an effective carry. This was sparked by the post about being held up with a sword. Since it would be difficult to get past the sword I could back up and throw a knife. The only problem for me is that I have to switch over the bali to my left hand, which is not as good as the right, to throw.

Why not use that?

Balisongs with appropriate blade styles can be thrown. I've not tried myself but am told that some artists are quite good. It can be a little hard on the knife, but in a self-defense situation, that's probably not what you'd be worried about.

The sword in my pocket was a joke my freind brock used to say about my Bali. To him 4' blade was pretty big.

I like the idea but I wonder if maybe a bali and pepper spray would not be better.

pepper fog would get past the sword and though I hate to say it probably have a better effect. Unless you use a bowie or arkansas toothpick you will have a hard time doing a lot of damage with a thrower.
Also learn JAK's way of throwing underhand it is harder to notice.

I like throwing knives, they're quiet.

Hmm..one thing I used to do is carry both. The balisong was hung vertical on my right hip in an open top sheath. The throwing knife was in a horizontal sheath on the belt,in back of me.I could effectively puul the throwing knife, make my throw...and just after release, pull out the balisong with the same hand.
I still do a "gunslinger" approach to carrying my balisong. It's a quick draw, and I can even close the knife and stick it directly back into the sheath in the same move...without looking. It looks cool when done right..although some sheaths do tend to fold a bit at the top,if they're open top design.

As for going against a sword wielding opponent,it's kinda tricky. If the person holding the sword is holding it almost like a bat and seems nervous,he doesn't know what he's doing. If he looks calm,he knows what he is doing.Either one is tricky to go against, but chances are you can *usually* (not always) intimidate the nervous one..but it's still safer to just go along with what he wants...just in case.
I am a longtime user of swords of many types, and have learned several styles..including un-armed vs. sword. But no matter what, unless you've got training in knives & un-armed vs. swords/staves and are really good..I wouldn't chance going against a nutcase with a sword or any other long weapon.

In most cases, you would not want to throw a knife at someone. The biggest reason is that they may use it as a weapon against you, and the second reason, is that it does not make a lot of sense to throw away your weapon.

There are exceptions. Usually throwing knives are carried in sets of three. If you think that throwing an item maybe effective. For example if you have a dog or an animal that is threatening you.

What makes a throwing knife effective as a weapon, is that they have a spear head on them, so they stay in their target. If you put even a very small throwing knife into the large muscle in a person leg it's going to slow them down quite a bit.

Some Balisong knives and their kissing cousin the switchblade have bayonet style blades. They are daggers and are designed to repeatedly stab with. The blade is designed to not stay in the target.

For me if they want to ban a knife, they should go more by the style of blade, more than how fast or how easy it is to open.

Most balisongs have more of a utility blade than a bayonet style blade in them. Thanks, JohnR7
