I am pretty much totally ignorant of them.

I have never held one, and don't know anyone who has one. I have seen some talk of them on the forums, but it is usually in reguards to wether or not someone is making a decent one now.

So, are they an ok choice for a tactical knife?

How come its hard to find a good one these days?

Do they reguire lots of practice to "bring into play"?

Did the one handed openers make them obsolete?

Whats the deal?

Only if you are very good with one. It does not take a lot of practice to get good but it does take a bit to get fancy. The classic 3 way flip can be mastered in about 2-3 hours of playing around. The very fast Ice Pick drop takes a good bit longer and is perhaps the fastes way to open one.

Visit www.balisongxtreme.com for some really cool info on them.

Well there are some decent ones for around $30. If you want some really sweet ones you can look for the older BM's or the new model 42 due out in a few weeks pictured below.

Not lots unless you want to learn flips. The basic moves can be learned in a matter of hours.

Did the one handed openers make them obsolete?

Nope, as Balisongs are, IMHO, in a class of there own.

Whats the deal?

The deal is I love them and can't wait till Benchmade release new versions.

Balisongs are great in a number of respects:
Good Ones AKA: Benchmades are made with 12c27 stainless blades and titanium handles. The knife is set up so that when locked, the blade will not connect with your hand under even the strongest of blows. When manipulating the balisong the uninitiated does have a good chance of cutting themselves pretty well though. As for being made obselete, I love my balisongs but i carry my Spyderco Military. I have found that cops believe my "innocent tool" routine with my liner lock more than my balisong. Check out the new Benchmade 42 Balisong at www.benchmade.com

C'mon KNZN, take a walk on the wild side!

These things are more fun than anyone should be allowed to have (with their clothes on anyway).

Tactical??? You can open Forward or ice pick grip in a blink. They can be used as a Kubotan, or for loading a punch. You can strike with either end of a closed Balisong. They're TOTALY ambidextrous friendly right out of the box. BTW, anything is tactical in the hands of the right person. Don't confuse the capabilities of the weapon, with the ABILITIES of the person.

Hard to find??? probably because they're illegal in about 90% (if not more) of the world. Many people don't want to own something they can't carry. For that reason, demand is lower than it would be if the law weren't an issue. Also consider what it takes to make one (work, time, and $$$). Not exactly easy money. All things considered, there's not much there in the form of inspiration for the manufacturers.

Require lots of Practice??? Basic openings........ no. Fancy tricks....... more than you'd ever imagine. The fancy stuff you'll see in places like my site, are mostly to build confidence in your hands and fingers. Fun as all heck too.

One hand openers make them obsolete??? Apples to Oranges my friend, it depends on your tastes. NOTHING could ever replace these in MY world.

Get one for yourself. I know you're curious or you wouldn't have asked. Play with it for awhile. See what you come up with.

If you have any problems, come over to my site. There's enough stuff in there to keep you busy for the next 10 years. I have everything from Techniques, to exercises, to Tips and Tricks. If you need, e-mail me with any questions you have. I answer all within 24 hours. Or you could visit the Message Board on my site (sorry Mike) and post questions to get opinions from the other Balisong fanatics.

I wouldn't fight with a balisong because i wouldn't fight with any knife. i have no training.

i do love balisongs though. they are really pretty when you get good at manipulation. it took me about 2 days to get a smooth opening on either position, and it took about 3 months of bustin' the heck out of a bad one to get some the arial stuff. i stopped learning new stuff, but i still use them to releive stress and what not every now and then. it's also a good way to show your friends something they'll never be able to do because they are huge sissies and won't get any knives. (that's just me though.)

Here around they are so heavily forbidden, that even thinking about them would get you jailed.
Why? Nobody knows. It's just a matter of policy.
So this post does not exist at all.....

Broken promises don't upset me. I just think, why did they believe me?

I hope that after I die, people will say of me: "That guy sure owed me a lot of money."

KNZN, you got me goin' now. I have never messed with one either, but now after reading the posts and checking out Clay's site, I gotta get me one. Benchmade ought to give you a commission on the 42 that I just gotta buy now. Thanks alot for the query, it sparked a new me in me.

KNZN, you are truly inspiring. One of my new mottos is now going to be "My needs are not many, but many are yet undiscovered". You may soon hear back from me on this if I keep enough fingers to type.

I love them. I have three. I have fooled with them on and off for years. Did the new folders replace them? Hardly. In the hands of someone that knows how to use it they are faster than any auto. Probably the most deadly tactical knife out there, that is why they are illegal in so many places. If you get one got to Clay's site and study it. It will save you some blood lose. They will cut you quick.

One might have balisong's edge on finger(s) accidentally while practicing or playing with it, in fact.

It is said blood, sweat, and tears can achieve something, but just think of what little you can purchase for a drip of your blood in other places... It's strange slight injuries ADD your love for you balis.

Flesh Gordon, and any other first timers,

You can get a decent quality, fairly cheap Jaguar Balisong from the Dragon Forge site. I think it's like $25. All in all, not too bad for a practice Bali.

http://www.dragon-forge.com/jaguar.html

Ahhhhhhh.......... my plan is finally working. Everyone will soon be hooked on the Balisong. Manufacturers of other knives will see there is a strong Balisong market again, and scramble to create their own models. I will finally have some more choices in my world.

AaaaaHahahahahahaha..........one can only hope!

Blade814,
I`ve got to disagree with what you said about Bali`s being illegal because they are so deadly.A Bali is no more deadly then any other knife. They are illegal due to ignorance.Hollywood has demonized the Bali along with the auto and our so called leaders,in an effort to be seen as doing something to combat crime and make us all safe have passed laws against inanimate objects.

When I try new tricks with a balisong (after having a look as Clay's site
smile.gif
) I put a strip of tape on the edge, so there's no danger for cutting myself.
Beside Clay's wbsite (I think it's the best) another good one is www.balisong.com .
And don't forget books:
Jeff Imada: "The Balisong Manual"
"The Advanced Balisong Manual"
s. Campbell, G. Cagaanan, S. Umpad:
"Balisong - The Lethal Art of Filipino Knife Fighting"

Have fun and take care of your fingers !

Well said Carver.

Tef_tef.. I saw your name posted in an earlier threa but I was not able to post because I was very busy with school work but it will be over soon. ..Aka-chan ga kitte ima****a ka? Dou? Ohisashiburi desu yo ne. Omedetou =)

All in all Clay said it well, and covered all bases. THe balisong being illegal makes it hard to get and adds to the mystysism I guess, however because of this small market not many 'high end' makers are willing to produce it. So when the avid fan gets hooked and busts up his china cheapies - finds out that there are clos to no high class balisongs out there and in his desire searches for old out of production models.

ALl in all I suggest a 30.00 Jaguar, knzn.
