I will be flying out of town next week from Ohio to Arkansas. What is the appropriate way to carry your balisong with you, specifically my BM42?

I'm guessing its safe in the suitcase, but I don't want to chance losing my first BM Balisong.

Arkansas, as far as I know, has a 3.5 inch blade length limit, so don't carry it there.

My only advice about the airport is, you're not going to be allowed to carry that knife on your person or in carry-on luggage.

You're going to have to put it in your regular luggage or leave it at home.

Yeah, you're definately going to want to avoid carrying your BM-42(s) with you (either on yourself or in your carry-on(s)), but it should be safe to have in your regular luggage.

If I was you I would leave the 42 home and bring a cheap balisong ,better to lose a 10 dollar knife then a bm42 .They may not let it on the plane even if it has a combo edge .

I've had to deal with this before. It depends on if Mr. X-ray man can recognize the folded knife for a weapon. If all else fails, I find the best way to talk yourself out of the situation is to convince them that it is for a serious martial arts study. People tend to respect that more. And nevery call it a butterfly knife, call it a balisong. It sounds a lot less menacing, and shows that you take your art seriously.

I even accidentally walked through a metal detector with a bali in my back pocket. I remembered it was there only after I heard the *beep beep beep*. I took it out slowly and he asked me how to open it. I used two hands, like I had never picked one up before. I must have looked young and dumb because he told me to just put it back in my car.

wrap it in a lead dentist-office-xray-cover, inside a lead box, inside your carry-on, and then the scanner might not be able to see your bali.

nevermind that they'll wonder why you have such a contraption, of course...

First off you most likely don't need it with you on your carry on, Manipulating a bali on the plane wouldn't be such a good thing.

But just put it in with your regular luggage, wrap it in a big towel ( Center of a towel usually appears dark in xray scans ). Then after you pick up your luggage you can resume carrying your knife.

I know this is completely off topic, (well, kinda) but since you all are talking about laws and bali's, i have some questions.

I live in michigan, and want to know what is lega/not legal with a bali in MI, does anyone know the laws of my state? Thanks a lot

from what I gather of michigan knife laws, A balisong is not classified as a switchblade and there is no language that prohibits them specifically.

I went through airport security to pick up my brother, forgot i had a small pen knife in my pocket and they wouldn't let me through. Put it in your luggage (not your carry on) and you should be safe.

If you visit http://pweb.netcom.com/~brlevine/sta-law.htm that site shows you laws for the states.

I live in Michigan as well. The last I knew, which was quite some time ago, several LEO's told me that a balisong isn't illegal to own.As far as carrying it though, many local laws prohibit it.Some local laws only state that you can only carry knives which are under a certain bladelength.I haven't checked into the laws in recent years,as I haven't been carrying in a long time.
I would suggest that you contact both your local and State police and ask them what the laws are (something that I need to do myself when I can find the time to).
